School bu less than By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Durham Board of Education Trustees are hammering away at its budget in an attempt to find an acceptable rate. And at last Wednesday's fi- nance meeting they took a giant step by carving two per cent from the figure. Before the April 14 meeting, the school board budget was sit- ting at 5.99 per cent with what appeared to be no further cuts possible. But he did acknowledge that the local workers ratified the contractin a vote last week. But it wasn't until Sunday, April 18th, the dark ice mass finally succumed to warm temperatures and disappeared from the lake. While April 18th is rather late for the ice leaving the lake, it's eleven days short of setting any record. The latest recorded date for the ice to disappear from Lake Scugog was April 29, 1965. The earliest date to catch a glimpse of the spark- ling waters of the lake was March 16, 1983, a span of six weeks difference. A complete list of the dates recorded by the Port Perry Star for the ice leaving Lake Scugog since 1872 can be found inside this issue of the Star.
