In accepting the nomination, Mr. Stevenson touched on both the past?and the future in his brief speech. "The past four years have been difficult," he said. "Diffi- cult decisions are being made and must be made." Looking 'back over: his first term in office, Mr. Stevenson noted the changes which his rid- ing has been through. ~ When he took office in No- vember, 1988 the population of 'the riding was 87,400. By 1990 it had grown to 120,000. "We are in a time of very rapid change. Governments are chal- lenged with the rapidity of change." | Noting this, he pointed to the number of projects which have materialized while he has been involved in the riding. These projects'included the establish- ment of the Total Quality Man- agement program at Durham College and the expansion of the Oshawa Airport. He also pointed to his involve- ment in the ongoing GATT talks and the interest that the com- munity has in achieving a bal- anced trading market. Mr. Stevenson cautioned however, that there are still many challenges for Canadians - in the years ahead, but stressed that the country can benefit from being competitive. "The challenges of today will bring opportunities for tomor- success in the competitive fu- ture." In a post meeting interview, Mr. Stevenson told reporters there was never any doubtin his mind that he would seek a sec- ondterm.. . - "I enjoy working with people and in doing this you have to en- Joy it," he said. "I enjoy the chal- lenge and I have no intentions of quitting." Mr. Stevenson also said he has no aspirations of becoming a cabinet minister. "In my present life the sun doesn't rise and fall over me be- ing a cabinet minister," he said. Mr. Stevenson said in terms of representing his constituents it did not matter whether or not he held a cabinet post. He was responding to a report in last week's Port Perry Star in Ross Stevenson gearing up for another term in politics 'which Liberal hopeful. 'Dave 'Robinson told a recent party gathering that the riding of urham "needs more than a backbencher." He promised to resign if not given a cabinet post after his first term. Co But it appears Mr. Stevenson did not take the remarks of Mr. Robinson too seriously. "I'll let the little members of the Liberal Party judge these statements," he told reporters. While Mr. Stevenson steered clear of touching upon his per- sonal strengths and accom- 'plishments over the past five years, others were not so reluc- tant. } Marion 'Manders, Durham Riding president who nominat- ed Mr. Stevenson, called him "a dedicated and outstanding per- son" who has a record of under- standing and devoted communi- ty servieein the riding. "By any standard his is-a - record of outstanding accom- plishment," she said. "Ross has established a model of service which is envied on both sides of the house." Even political heavyweights like Solicitor General Doug Lewis threw their support be- hind the incumbent MP.
