"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 20, 1993 - 35 Cartwright High Senior Band is off to Quebec Blackstock News by Joyce Kelly Congratulations to Mrs. Shir- ley Turner who was presented with a Canada 125 medal at the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Awards Presentations last Monday. Prince Edward pre- sented Shirley with her medal at the ceremony held at Lon- don, Ontario. Congratulations Shirley on this very worthy award for you community ser- vices. On Thursday, April 1, Julie Obstfeld represented Black- stock and District Lions Club at the District A-16 Competition at Beaverton with her speech, "Manners". The competition was very keen with other topics being Mrs. Crackenhours Jun- ior Kindergarten Class, Assas- sination of J.F. Kennedy, Doors, Wood Imponderables, Smiles, Being a Movie Star, St. Nicho- las and Choices. Julie proved herself to be a most able com- petitor and the local Lions were proud to have her representing our local club. Congratulations Julie. Members of the Blackstock Agricultural Society Board are reminded of the April meeting which will be held on this Thursday, April 22 at the Rec Centre at 8 p.m. On Friday evening a fine crowd attended the Silent Auc- tion "and Pictures at the St. John's Anglican Parish Hall and Church. Many interesting items including baking, crafts, airplane rides and painting had been donated for the silent auc- tion. Ken Carmichael, and ar- dent birdwatcher, showed a group of excellent slides on many types of warblers and oth- er birds that can be seen in the Scugog area. An excellent eve- ning. On April 30, Blackstock Unit- ed Church will be holding its talen auction when a large va- riety of items will be offered for sale. If you wish to donate an item for this event call Aileen Van Camp, Carolyn Morton or Jean Ferguson. Harvey Gra- ham will be auctioneer for the evening. Mark April 30 on you calendar for a fun evening. The Cartwright High School Senior Band will be leaving on Thursday to attend the Inter- national Music Festival held in Quebec city. They will be per- forming there on April 24. The band will be at the Cartwright Central Public School to have a final rehersal/concert begin- ning at 7 p.m. The public is wel- come to attend this event for which there is no admission fee. Best wishes are extended from the community to the stu- dents and director Mr. John Beirness. There were 11 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners: Grace Bassant, Vera Fawns, Jim Redman, Ross McRoberts, Nerta Masters, Lorna Swain, Lulu Faint and Vivian Faint. Lucky draws were won by Charlie Stapleton, Bernice Wells, Jim Redman, Lorna Swain, Ross McRoberts as well as several other special draws. A family shower was held on Sunday in the beautifully deco- rated Rec Centre when mem- _ bers of the Grove:and Gayman families gathered to honour Jeff Grove -and Kelly Gibson who will soon be married. After a bountiful dinner Jeff and Kel- ly opened their many lovely gifts. Both the bride and groom- to-be thanked Jeff's relatives for their gifts and best wishes. A pleasant afternoon of visiting was enjoyed. Many of the "Snowbirds" are returning from their winter in the south. Recently returned are Andrea Weir and Jim and Dorothy Marlow. Welcome back. While Doreen Van Camp of Maryfield, Saskatchewan is visiting her mother Mrs. Mar- garet Van Camp, they are en- joying visiting relatives and friends. On Sunday they were guests of Lois and Glenn McLe- od, Cheryl and Beverly of Oro- no. Jill Van Camp of Kingston was home for the weekend with Richard and Ruby Van Camp and Lawrence and visited her aunt Doreen. Word has been received of the passing of Mrs. Ardis McArthur of Toronto. Sympathy is extend- ed to Ardis and his family as well as to other relatives. Ardis is a native of Blackstock and has many friends in this area.
