"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Marsha Clouthier swims to three silver medals at international meet From Page 1 individual medley where she placed 11th overall with a time of 5:08. She also swam to a six place finish in the 200 individu- al medley with a time of 2:27. The competitors swam every day while at the competition. Marsha said they arrived on the afternoon of April 6 and swam that evening. She then swam twice a day for the rest of the competition. Marsha qualified for the swim team after 'posting the fastest time by a 15-year-old in the 100-metre and 200-metre butterfly at the National Cham- pionships held in New Bruns- wick in March. * Last year Marsha was ranked number one in the nation in the 13-14-year-old 200-metre but- terfly, a distinction she held for most ofthe year. Marsha was joined in Germa- ny by fellow swimmer Laura Lee, of Uxbridge and coach of the Uxbridge Swim Club Mary Bryon. Marsha described the inter- national competition as "quite an experience", as she has never competed anywhere like Ger- many before. "There was so much pressure. I had to swim my heart out," Marsha told the Port Perry Star. She described the atmos- phere as what she thinks the Olympics would be like. When swimmers are getting ready the crowd cheers and then it goes to- tally calm when the race is to stfrt, she said. Marsha will not be able to compete at the event next year * as she willbe too old. For now she says she will com- pete at national meets for the next three years until it comes time for Olympic trials. : "From there we'll Just see what happens," she said. MPP seeks to improve transportation By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Gord Mills is taking it to the streets in an effort to improve the transportation links in the area. The Durham East MPP will be sending out approximately 10,000 questionnaires to area residents in the northern por- tion of the riding. The letter, entitled "I need your help", will solicit the resi- dents' comments and needs con- cerning transportation in the riding. : Mr. Mills hopes to present the information from the question- naire to Gilles Pouliot, Minister of Transportation, when they meet shortly. Mr. Mills said this action was taken after the minister an- nounced a number of initiatives to improve the transportation links to communities west of To- ronto. No plans were announced for the eastern portion of the Greater Toronto Area, however. But Mr. Mills said the eastern communities need improved transportation as well. He said many residents in the northern portion of the riding are stranded as there is not ade- quate transportation links to the south. Mr. Mills said the residents are often unable to access the so- cial services which are only available in the southern por- tion of Durham. "We need to push to do some- thing for that area which has no public access," he said.
