Hospital expansion set to begin in May - be cleared by the hospital board - which has been awaiting this "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" # a The board received the notifi- cation via fax on April 22. With the last hurdle. cleared, hospital officials can now award the tender to Dineen Construc- tion. The agreement between the hospital and the contractors will be signed next week. Dineen was the lowest bidder in the tendering process which - was completed last month. The hospital board was criti- cized recently by an anonymous letter to the editor in the Port Perry Star for not using local contractors on the project, but Mr. Brown defended the process saying it was done correctly and fairly. He said the tendering process was conducted according to Ministry of Health regulations and all contractors had an op- -portunity to apply for pre- qualification. Although the overall contract was not awarded to a local con- tractor, Ted Griffen, chairman of the Building Committee, said there was a possibility some of the work would be conducted by local people. : "We're going to try our darn- dest to try to get them to use lo- cal people," Mr. Griffen said. Mr. Griffen said it was possi- ble. that some of the sub- contracting work could be han-* dled by local contractors. Receiving permission to start the project is the latest hurdle to $5 # Ep ~ 3 . #1 held a car wash on Saturday to raise money for Muscu- ers Paul Dick, Wayne Lown, Jamie Donaldson, Larry Page, moment for many years. The expansion of the Port Perry-based hospital features an expanded rehabilitation cen- tre and a larger emergency de- partment. It will also increase the size of the cafeteria and kitchen facili- ties and provide a larger area for laboratory and health In total, it will feature 25,000 square feet of new construction as well as 13,000 square feet of renovations. Mr. Griffen said the hospital expansion will provide the area with a - modern hospital, of which the community will be proud. , He said it would be something for the community to grow into in the years ahead. "This facility is sized for the future," he said. "We're looking: afew years down the road." The hospital officials praised the area residents for making the expansion a reality by con- tributing to the hospital's fund- raising activities. "If it wasn't for the people of Scugog and their generous do- nations, it wouldn't be here," Mr. Griffen said. "Their gene- rosityis the only reason why one of the best small hospitals in Ontario will be here."
