ee TRAE 18 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuasday, April 27, 1993 Passion for plants led local women down garden path and into business Darlynne Colmer and Gerda Tanti have cultivated a unique idea. The Port Perry residents have started a business called The English Garden and will de- sign, prepare and plant flower beds, herbs, fruits and vegeta- ble gardens for their clients. "A lot of people want a garden but don't have the time," Mrs. Tantisays. "Our service is mainly for peo- ple who want to get started (gar- dening) but don't know exactly how to put it together, or who don't have the time," her part- ner, Mrs. Colmer, adds. Although neither of the wom- en have a degree in horticul- ture, they have learned tricks of the trade through experience andinterest. - "Really, that's how you be- come an expert," Mrs. Colmer says. / Both women have extensive annual and perennial gardens at their homes, but the gardens are designed to reflect their own personality and needs. Mrs. Tanti, a gourmet cook, incorporates herbs into her gar- dens, while Mrs. Colmer, who enjoys crafts, complements her beds with flowers that retain their beauty when dried. Just as their own gardens are tailored to them, Mrs. Tanti and Mrs. Colmer want to design oth- er people's gardens to suit thei personalities and needs. After an initial visit, the wom- en will present the client with a garden plan, a list of the plants used, and the different flower- ing times. : And although they sow the seeds, it will be their clients who reap the benefits.
