Absent After a very successful season, the S. A. Cawker Public School junior girls basketball team just missed making the Final Four Tournament with a tough 27-24 loss to Dr. R. Thorton Public School. Snowmobile Club elects its executive for 1993/94 season The Port Perry Snowmobile Club held its annual Landown- ers Banquet on Saturday, April 17. President Charlie Harper extended a welcome and a much appreciated thank you to the landowners for use of their properties and their assistance enabling the club to run trails. Representatives were also present from the dealers who sell trail permits, Brian Hall and Inspector Ross Smith from the Durham Region Police. Inspector Smith thanked the club for the donation for safety equipment for their snow ma- chines. He also expressed how pleased they were with the way things went this past year. Their two machines put on about 3,600 km. Mayor Howard Hall also brought greetings from the town council and expressed the importance of the closeness with the club and the landown- ers. He was sorry to see that some people disrespect land- owners property but was pleased to say he had no prob- lems reported to him this past year. Entertainment was supplied by Bernie Black. Wendy Davis thanked Marion Lee for her past nine years of co-ordinating the banquet and was sorry to hear she is retiring from this po- sition. On Sunday a general meeting was held with election of offi- cers following. Eagle boys capture basketball pennant Two weeks ago the junior boys captured the Central Dur- ham Championship pennant by defeating Thorah 52-34. Last week the team beat two other area champions to. advance to the Final Four out of over 100 schools. Cawker defeated Dr. Phillips from Oshawa 24-23. and then edged the defending Durham champions, | croft, in a cliff hanger, 41-39. The final tournament will be = held Thursday at Anderson Col-- legiate in Whitby. Other highlights this year in- clude winning the "A" champi- onship in the annual Port Perry Invitational, as well as several smaller tournament victories. 'Cawker's success this year is due in large part to the enthu- siastic and willing attitude ex- hibited by the entire team. Many Port Perry residents have fond memories of basket- ball at the junior level. This Ea- gle team of 1998 continued the tradition with exciting action during games and tournaments this season. The D.E.A.A. playoff games in April saw our girls defeat Ux- bridge 38-19, Cartwright 31-18, Thorah Central 21-10, Sunder- land 20-18, and R.H. Cornish 28-23, to capture the Central Durham Area Pennant! ~ Actjon in the All Durham Re- gion Playoffs started out well with a 23-10 victory over Glen Dhu Public School. The team's bid for the prestigious Final Four Tournament ended with a close loss to Dr. R. Thornton Public School 27-24. Ladies Bowling Le Low Tournament at Apple- However, a few. players have really stood out over the course of the season; 'Guards Kam Cooper and Lawrence Cook ~ have demonstrated aggressive defence and fine outside shoot- ing. Forwards Mark Heffern and Chris Parsons have provid- ed excellent rebounding in both: "ends of the court and have con- tributed offensively all season long. In addition, forward Jeff Ashton has supplied fine play- "making and has often been the emotional spark: plug. for the team. a vu Cawker has relied on a fast- paced passing game and Coach Murray feels this. is the most unselfish team: he has ever worked with. All-and all, it has been an extremely enjoyable season. ! Cawker girls win All of our players had. a fine season and contributed to our team success. Special mention floes to team captain, Carrie Ol- erton, who inspired the rest of the team with her fine skills and sportsmanship. Coaches Ken Smart and Su- san Watson look forward to working with returning juniors, Jill Pashley, Nina Page, Emma Marshall and Amy Davidson next season. They wish our graduating Grade 6 players, Carrie Ollerton, Daniell Bab- cock, Katie Collins, Tara Colby, Mandi Coates, Erin Broome, Courtney St. John and Ashleigh Murphy, good luck as they move up to intermediate team try outs next year.
