"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" ---- Rag. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 4, 1993 - 7 Letters to the editor Scugog pesticide-free ? To the Editor: Dr. Joe Cummins of the Dept. of Plant Sciences at University of Western Ontario believes that the use of herbicides on lawns, school yards, golf cours- es, railway "t highway right of way can be curtailed if munici- pal councils are willing to take action. He further states it would save municipalities mon- ey and greatly benefit the envi- ronment if we all learned to live with dandelions on the lawn and weeds on the patio. One of the most widely used pesticides is gramoxone, better known as paraquat. University of Florida's lung specialist, Dr. Edward Block says "paraquat" is probably the most deadly poi- sons known to man. There is no known antidote to paraquat. It may be absorbed into the body by the inhaling of dispersing va- pors, wind-carried drift, skin absorption or by ingestion dur- ing the transfer from hands to food. Slight skin abrasions make the movement from the skin to the bloodstream more swift and certain with this toxin and with other pesticides. Killex, manufactured by Ciba-Gergy Canada Ltd., con- tains at least 95 grams per litre of 2-4D and is a herbicide linked three American studies have linkqd to the use of 2-4D and other weed killers. (Equinox 1985). Pesticides nge contaminates the global atmosphere, the world's fresh water and the oceans. No matter where they are used, persistent organic pesticides eventually get into the bodies of every life form on earth...To a scientist there is no such thing as "zero" contamina- tion. (Ontario Waste Manage- ment Corp. 1989) Anyone who knows the most elementary aspects of ecology would realize what folly it is to use chemicals to control pests. Spraying powerful poisons that kill all exposed insects or weeds is no more "management" of pests than killing everyone in New York City would be manag- ing "urban crime." (David Suzuki 1988) Citizen groups in many Cana- dian provinces are working dili- gently, both to alert consumers to the chemical problems of modern herb and peat spray programs and to lobby govern- ment at all levels to adopt safer, saner methods of pest and vege- tation management. We live in the country for a quality of life it af- fords, free from noise and pollu- tion and then our elected offi- cials come along and change the zones. Our family has invested a great deal in renovations to our home to meet the needs of our handicapped child. I took a walk to the wetland recently at 8 a.m. and the sounds and the wildlife were a home but rather decrease the saleability. We did so because we hoped to be here a long time. The changing of zoning for that property breaks a trust we thought we had with our elected officials to leave rural property rural. We need to stop this proposal now! If, Mayor Hall, you think this is such a wonderful idea what about in your backyard? Yours sincerely, Jan and Barry Grisdale backyard joy to behold. I feel that we are the caretakers of our natural wildlife and should not sell our souls for the 10 pieces of silver.
