"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Landscape architecture becoming increasingly diverse Having spent the last five years studying landscape archi- tecture at the University of Guelph I have often been asked what the profession of land- scape architecture involves. Re- alizing that the profession might be suffering from a slight identity crisis I decided to take this opportunity to give the un- initiated a brief introduction to landscape architecture in Cana- da. The definition that has been provided by the Canadian Soci- ety of Landscape Architects states: "Landscape architecture ap- plies artistic and scientific prin- ciples in the design process, and has a specific focus in address- ing research, planning, design and management of both natu- ral and built environments." Landscape architecture how- ever is becoming increasingly diverse and a definition which outlines its many facets is hard to provide. In doing so we would find that as early as 1870 landscape ar- chitects were involved in many estate developments. American landscape designers also had a large amount of influence in Canada. Frederick Law Olm- sted, who designed Central Park in New York City, is con- sidered the father of landscape architecture in North America. He and his firm were also in- volved in a number of Canadian projects including Mount Royal in Montreal and the National capital in Ottawa. The influence of landscape ar- chitects throughout the 1920s and 30s was instrumental in shaping a number of important places in Canada. Many of our popular cemeteries, parade grounds, and public parks were designed by landscape archi- tects. The majority of Universi- ty campuses across North % OFF America have also been planned by landscape archi- tects. The 1960s was a period of im- mense growth with the forma- tion of schools at the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto. Another important step was the design for Expo '67 which provided landscape ar- chitecture with much deserved recognition. Involvement in en- vironmental assessments, plan- ning, resource development, transportation, and large scale urban and recreational develop- ment continued to expand over - theyears. Landscape architects contin- ue to become more and more in- volved in designing as well as protecting the natural and built environment. Whether working in the private sector or the pub- lic sector, in large scale develop- ment or small scale design, landscape architecture has demonstrated a commitment to this country and its cultural and natural history. Presently in Canada land- scape architecture is offered at the University of Guelph, To- ronto, Manitoba, British Co- lumbia and Montreal, as well as a professional landscape tech- nology program at Ryerson. Fol- lowing graduation a three year internship period is required before writing the entrance ex- ams for the Ontario Association of Landscape Architecture and thereby becoming a licensed landscape architect. As the profession gains more recognition landscape archi- tects will continue to add a cru- cial element to the designing and shaping of our country. With a strong background in ecology, art, history, and engi- neering; landscape architects together with planners, archi- tects and engineers can help to ensure what we are building to- day is both responsible and ap- propriate to this country's fu- ture.
