22 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 11, 1993 Local man is the student union president of Lakehead University By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star When Lyn McLeod steps down as leader of the Ontario Liberal party, the person re- placing her may be a local man. b Jamieson, a party mem- ber, has aspirations to work within the provincial Liberal framework as either a civil ser- vantor as a politician. "I enjoy politics," the 23-year- old Port Perry man told the Star, adding, though, that he has no desire for federal politics. "Provincial politicians are more accountable to the people because they are closer to them," he says. Mr. Jamieson knows that close feeling already. In Febru- ary he was elected student un- ion president of Lakehead Uni- versity in Thunder Bay. He garnered 1,162 votes, compared to his opponent's 377 votes. "It's big-time exciting," he says of being the top student representative in Ontario's smallest university. While working towards a Honors Bachelor double degree in outdoor recreation and geog- raphy, Mr. Jamieson was a member of the university's board of directors. He held that $2.00/person Cartwright High School and Cartwright Central Public School present Music Night 1993 A Special Tribute in Memory of Mr. S. Saywell $ 7:30 p.m. C.C.P.S. As president, he will work closely with the school's admin- istration on student relation is- $5.00/family sues, as well as planning stu- dent activities. Mr. Jamieson sees the oppor- tunity as a way to "enhance my communication skills while making the transition into the working world." Only one month into his term of office, he says he has already made some very valuable con- tacts. Calling himself an "average kid in high school", Mr. Jamie- son says "I didn't come into my own until university." As well as his homework and board of director responsibili- ties, Mr. Jamieson also refereed hockey matches and served as a live-in caregiver for a disabled student for two years. "There are all kinds of ways to do everything, without sacrific- ing anything," he says, adding "I'want to show people that they can do something, if they really want to. Life's what you make of it." Because of his active school life, Mr. Jamieson was chosen as one of several students to be profiled in a promotional video tape for Lakehead University. "It's kind of a 'day in the life" film," he says, explaining it shows both him and the student he cared for at home, school, and participating in extra- curricular activities. The video will be shown at universities, colleges and high schools across Canada.
