Taylor Ford Mites win in no-hitter against Thornhill After a very competitive se- lection process which was pre- ceded by five indoor skills clin- ics, Port Perry's Rep team in the York-Durham Fastball league has now been assembled. Returning from last year to be veterans will be Matt Sker- ratt, Tim Jones, Mike LeFort and Mike Wiseman. Filling out the regular lineup will be Matt Breen, Mike Koury, Stuart Co- chrane, Jeff Kane, Matt Clay- ton, §Steve MacLennan, Mike Milligan, and Graham Dick. Spares for the team will be Brandon Haugen and Pierce Jones. On April 28 the Taylor-Ford Mites played at home in an ex- hibition game against Willow- dale who are predicted to be the toughest team in the 10 team league this year. With a roster composed of mostly second year players the Willowdale boys gave a thrashing that was very instructive to our young players who were overwhelmed in their first exposure to top-calibre competitive ball. Splitting pitching chores in this game were Tim Jones and Mike LeFort. Our only hit off the hot Willowdale pitcher was a double by Steve MacLennan. Stuart, Graham, Mike Koury, Mike Milligan and Matt Sker- ratt earned walks. The lessons learned from this game and from later practices were used successfully in an ex- hibition game at Thornhill on May 3, as our defence and base running was noticeably sharp- er. As well Tim and Mike Le- Fort showed better pitching control to combine for a "no- hitter" with a total of 11 strike- outs. Highlights of the game in- cluded a "tagout" at home by Le- Fort (now catching) and Tim as well as a double play started by second baseman Matt Breen on to Wiseman at first who alertly relayed back to home plate where Matt Skerratt laid down the tag on the runner coming from third. LeFort was also able to surprise Thornhill with a nicely executed delayed steal of home in the third inning. Offensively Mike LeFort had three hits (one a nice bunt); Matt Clayton, Mike Wiseman and Tim (nice triple) each col- lected two hits; Matt Skerratt had one hit and scored three runs, Jeff and Mike Koury had singles and Graham had two walks. Good turn around guys! The regular season opener for Port Perry's team will be May 12 at 6:30 p.m. (Water St. South) against Aurora. Local sports groups planning monster bingo on June 5 Earlier this year, major sports groups in the township were invited by the Scugog Parks and Recreation Commit- tee to meet to consider partici- pating in a joint fundraising venture. After a series of exploratory meetings, eight of these groups decided that they wished to par- ticipate, and an umbrella group, known as the Scugog Sports Development Commit- tee, was set up. The groups involved are Port Perry Minor Hockey Corpora- tion, Port Perry MoJacks Jr. C. Hockey Club, Port Perry KRin- gette Association, Port Perry Figure Skating Club, Port Perry Broomball Association, MoJacks hold end of year awards By Shawn Bastarache The Port Perry ModJacks hockey club held its 21st annual awards banquet Saturday night at the Legion Hall in Port Perry. Along with family and friends, the players, coaches and executive members gath- ered to celebrate what turned out to be a relatively successful 1992-93 season for the Mo- Jacks. In the face of the mid-season resignation of a head coach - not to mention the injuries a 40- game schedule can produce - this club compiled a regular sea- son record of 23 wins, 15 losses and three ties to finish in third place in the Central division of the Junior C loop. Prior to the start of the '92/93 campaign, the club was prepar- ing for what was expected to be one of those lean years when a junior hockey team rebuilds af- ter losing several veteran players. The fact is, however, with the lineup of solid young rookies that advanced all the way to the division semi-final this season, Port Pore) should be in for some exciting Junior C hockey in the next few years. Head coach Ken Harman, though not revealing whether he would return to coach next season, spoke highly of his players, telling them Saturday that they should be proud of their effort last season, specifi- cally noting the elimination of the Uxbridge Bruins in a gruel- ling first-round playoff series. Harman also speculated on the potential success in store for the MoJacks should the core of the team return for the '93-94 season. Harman ended by handing out team photos to his players before the individual awards were announced. The players themselves were given the responsibility of vot- ing for teammates who they be- lieved deserved recognition, and in so doing came up with some very fitting selections: Shannon Todd was voted Roo- kie of the Year. The trophy do- nated by executive member Carl Luke and his family should go nicely beside the league tro- phy Todd won for top rookie. The Oshawa native led all ModJacks with 69 points includ- Ing 40 assists. Brett Puckrin, who captained the club last season, was given the award for the best team player. The trophy was donated by Chic Carnegie and Ralph Ballard. Puckrin's consistency on the blueline and the respect he com- manded among his teammates helped to bring many of the younger players along. One such player was rookie defenceman Fodd Dennis who collected 23 points during the regular season and was voted the most improved player. Dennis, a product of the Oshawa Minor Hockey system, Port Perry Minor Softball Asso- ciation, Scugog Youth Soccer, and Scugog Boathouse. The group is holding a Mon- ster Bingo at the Scugog Arena on Saturday, June 5, starting at 7 p.m. With a guaranteed prize board of $5,000, including a jackpot game worth $3,000, a large crowd is anticipated. Bin- go enthusiasts should bear in mind that only the first 500 players will be accommodated. Doors open at 5 p.m. Organizers are confident that the event will be supported by the local populace, in particular by those who are involved in any of the organizations that will share the proceeds. Plan to attend! banquet should prove to be an integral part of the MoJacks' squad next season. Top defensive honors went to Jason Cochrane. Cochrane was by far the best two-way player the MoJacks had last season. A Port Perry native, his tire- less work ethic makes him the type of player any coach would love to have in his lineup. The Vaughan McKee Memo- rial trophy is awarded each year to the player who is consid- ered the most dedicated and hardest worker. This year the award went to three-year vete- ran Jeff Barr. Barr collected 13 goals and added 10 assists for the MaJacks this season and Turnto Page 41
