The MoJacks introduced a new award this season in mem- ory of one of their own who was tragically killed in an accident last June. The Dan Sluggett Memorial trophy is given to the player who typifies excellence in academics as well as a solid dedication to his team. Defenceman Steve Staniland was the inaugural recipient Saturday as he, while playing good, "stay at home" defence for Port Perry, maintained a 78 per cent average at Seneca College last year. The most valuable player award deservedly went to Jim Vernon. Vernon notched 29 als and was second only to hannon Todd in total points a throughout the regular season with 55. Not only can the big left- winger put the puck in the net but he was the player others could look to for inspiration. It seemed that Vernon could raise his level of play when the team needed a spark, either by an ex- citing end to end rush or a crushing hit. So we can now oftlicially close the book on the MoJacks' '92-93 season and look forward to next year with a good crop of young players who now have the first year of Junior C hockey under their belts, and should come fly- ing out of the gates come the start of the '93-94 campaign. After all, as MoJacks' general manager Murray Parliament reminded everyone Saturday, training camp begins in early September. banquet recently.
