"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Boaters rescue trio from lake By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Two local men came to the rescue of three tourists whose boat capsized on Lake Scugog on Sunday, May 9. Gordon Baker launched his 18-foot Bayliner at the Port Perry Boat Launch and was just heading out onto the lake when he noticed that the wind had blown the hat off of a fellow boater ahead of him. Mr. Baker turned his boat around and .retrieved the hat out of the water. But that wasn't to be his only rescue for the day. Upon turning his boat around he noticed the people who had lost the hat were clinging to the side of their boat. Although three other boats made it to the scene before Mr. Baker, none of the boaters at- tempted to help the victims -- a three-year-old boy, his father, and grandfather. | "I can't understand why these people didn't help them," Mr. Baker said. He pulled his boat alongside of the family, and with the help of his friend Paul Rolland, pulled the child to safety while instructing the men to climb aboard using the swim plat- form. He then took them back to shore while pulling their boat. "There's no way that boat should have flipped," Mr. Baker said of the 14-foot fibreglass craft, powered by a 50 horse- power Merc. Although he did not get the | ,. victims' names. he said they did < Bark Nuggets--------- tell him it was their first trip in their new boat. Mr. Baker advised them to learn more about boating before gettingin the boat again. But he can sympathize with them. Manuals on safe boating are available, but ones that give all the rules and regulations are hard to find. Although he at- GM considers a third shift General Motors of.Canada and the Canadian Autoworkers reached a tentative agreement last week adding a third shift at the Oshawa Truck Plant. The agreement in principle, worked out last week, will save approximately 650 jobs. The deal must now be studied by the national union and rati- fied by members of Local 222. A GM spokesman said they were optimistic that the agree- ment would be reached and an- ticipates that the third shift will tended numerous boating shows when he first purchased his Bayliner four years ago, he still felt unsure about all the procedures. . He says stricter government boating regulations should be enforced and drivers should be licensed. begin in mid-June. The announcement could not have come at a better time. This expanded production will ena- ble some of the employees laid off from the Scarborough Van Plant, as well as other GM oper- ations, to return to work. Although details of the agree- ment could not be released, it was revealed that the two sides dealt with issues concerning: overtime, maintenance and shift changes. -- ACTOR'S WORKSHOP Sessions begin Tuesday, June 8 at 7:30 Instructor: ¢ 5 ol LI « reg. $46.00 NOW reg. $42.00 NOW GREENBANK GARDEN CENTRE um.
