"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Letter to the editor Flu-like symptoms from aerial spraying To the Editor: Last year people in Muskoka Lakes district became ill after aerial spraying for gypsy moth. some suffered flu-like symp- toms for weeks such as Steve Curry, a township councillor and his family. Mr. Curry intro- duced a recommendation to council to discontinue aerial spraying. Another township, Carling, passed a recommenda- tion to cease spraying on June 16, 1992. Other residents in the area suffered from viral pneu- monia after spraying and many Forest Tax rebate eliminated To the Editor: Yesterday I received a letter from the Forest Policy Branch of the provincial government letting me know that the Man- aged Forest Tax Rebate Pro- gram has been eliminated effec- tive the 1992 tax year. Eight years ago, I decided to plant 13,000 trees on my land, because I like trees and the re- bate program also encouraged this. I am under the obligation of a 15-year contract with the Ministry of Natural Resources to maintain this forest. I signed the contract knowing that the government of the time had not mentioned any connec- tion between the tax rebate pro- gram and this contract. The re- bate program was promoted separately through brochures. Now I see how governments conveniently use these loose ends to unilaterally withdraw their support when they arbi- trarily decide to do so. Who needs trees anyway? Let's pay lip service to the environment! The New Democratic govern- ment did not dare touch the Farm Tax Rebate Program, be- cause they know well they will be confronted by thousands of angry farm owners who are suf- fering enough as it is. So the for- est rebate program was chosen to be the silent victim for now. Is the Farm Rebate Program next? Who knows? I think in the next election I will vote for a party that would advocate a 70 per cent reduc- tion in ministers' salaries and no trips to any environmental conference, especially to Rio de Janeiro! Wouldn't that be an incentive for those who really want to serve the people and the envi- ronment? Yours sincerely, Jim Aazam. The sprays used were either B.T. a microbial pesticide and carbaryl, a chemical pesticide. B.T. is propelled by "inert" material which are not required to be listed, but are well known chemicals such as benzene (a known human carcinogen), pen- tachlorophenol, carbon tetra- chloride (a carcinogen, depress- ant of the central nervous system, and potential ground- water contaminant) asbestos, D.D.T. (banned in 1972 as an active ingredient because of its damage to wildlife reproduction and its accumulation in organ- isms) formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), xylene and hexa- chlorophene which contains di- oxin. Even if inert materials are known to the E.P.A. and to the registrant, the public is not al- lowed to know. Inert ingre- dients are afforded trade secret status and info is unobtainable by the public (Marketplace, De- cember 1992). 0 Men's Arrow & B.V.D. It is also a known human carcinogen and chemical that bioaccumulates in the bodies of organisms. (Prof. Joe Cumins - Dept. of Biological - Sciences - Western University). Last year a resident whose property borders on Lake Jo- seph found dead fish on her shoreline, dead raccoons in the woods and heard of many simi- lar reports of destroyed wildlife and human illness. Not just the gypsy moths die after spraying.
