The Lake Scugog Historical Society is gearing up for a resto- ration project of the circa 1860 church, located on Scugog Is- land. The estimated cost of the project is $68,000. And last week representa- tives from the historical society learned that at least some of their financial worries had been alleviated when they were awarded a grant for $48,000. An additional $5,000 in cash is also included. The grant from the Depart- ment of Employment and Immi- gration Canada will allow the historical society to begin the work on the church. An extensive restoration pro- ject will begin June 1 at the church. The project includes shingling the roof, constructing a new foundation, replacing the support beams under the build- ing, levelling the floor and re- painting the exterior of the church. The job creation grant will al- low the historical society to hire six area workers who are cur- rently unemployed. The project is expected to last 16 weeks be- fore wrapping up at the end of September. The project will be quite an event as well. The restoration will be conducted using skills Oshawa By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Expansion plans for Oshawa Airport are expected to take off shortly following an announce- ment that funding was in place. Regional, provincial and fed- eral officials made the an- nouncement Friday afternoon. With this federal and provin- cial money secured, the long awaited plans for the expansion of the municipal airport can be- gin. Plans call for the extension of two runways, a new taxiway, \ and tools from the 1800s. It will be captured on video tape to be transformed into a production atit conclusion. "I'm so pleased about the grant because it means that not only do we get the restoration project completed, but we will be putting money back into the community by hiring six peo- ple," said Paul Arculus, presi- dent of the Lake Scugog Histori- cal Society. In addition to the six workers, other laborers will be hired for other aspects of the job-as well. An architect and an engineer have been hired to oversee the work. The historical society must raise $19,000 as its share of the project. To date, $7,000 has been raised and Mr. Arculus is confident the remainder can be raised. In fact, he estimates that $10,000 can be raised by the Ca- noe the Nonquon and Triathlon events alone. Mr. Arculus admits he has been overwhelmed by the gene- rosity of the community. Since announcing the resto- ration plans last month the do- nations have been flowing in on a steady basis. "It's amazing that in times of a recession there are so many people who are generous," he said. "People realize it's part of the heritage and character of Turn to page 5 and. the construction of a new air terminal building and apron at the north end of the airfield. A total of $6 million, to be split evenly between the federal and provincial governments, was committed during the after- noon press conference. Minister of State for Trans- port, Shirley Martin, praised the expansion project, stating it will aid in the economic develop- mentin the region. "The quality of Oshawa's in- frastructure will help maintain $6 million facelift the competitive strength of the city and region in the new global economy. The work to be done will also contribute to safety and efficiency," she said. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema echoed the sentiments of Mrs. Martin. "What's good for Oshawa is good for the region and vice ver- sa," hesaid. Chairman Herrema said the expanded airport will serve as a catalyst in attracting additional companies to the area who might have been reluctant to move into the area in the past. "The timing is perfect," he said. The extensive financial com- mitment shows the level of con- fidence which the two levels of government have in the region, he said. Oshawa Mayor Nancy Dia- mond, who along with Durham MP Ross Stevenson and a con- tingent of others lobbied hard for the funding, called Friday's announcement a historicevent. Many officials expressed con- cern that the area lacked the in- frastructure to inaintain or at- tract bigbusiness to the area. In fact, there was a concern that General Motors of Canada was considering pulling out of Oshawa to a more profitable lo- Turnto Page 4
