At the same time the Senior swimmers and top qualifiers were involved in time trials at the University of Toronto. The enthusiasm of the Novice members led them to several awards, with many members swimming their best times. The Seniors were tired after a' long week of training, but many managed to post their best times at the time trials as well. Jenny Cramm and Erin Bird both qualified at the time trials to go on to the long course Pro- vincial Championships. Results from the Central Re- gion "D" Championships is as follows. Ashleigh Thomas sec- ond in 50m butterfly, third in 25m butterfly, fourth in 50m backstroke and sixth in the 100 individual medley. Haley Thompson was second in both the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, Amanda Vanderlee fourth in 25m backstroke and sixth in 25m freestyle, Amanda Wakeford second in the 200m individual medley, third in the 100m backstroke and 100m but- terfly, fourth in the 50m back- stroke and. sixth in the 50m but- Junior In the last game of the season the Leafs played to a 8-2 victory over the Canadiens in Junior Floor Hockey. Aiden Ball was fifth in the 25m butterfly, Neil Manchee was second in the 100m individ- ual medley, third in the 100m backstroke and fourth in the 100m breast stroke, Paul Ser- geant was third in the 50m backstroke and Patrick McLaughlin was sixth in the 50m butterfly. A gold medal performance was turned in by the nine and 10-year-old boys team consist- ing of Sean McLaughlin, Aidan Ball, Neil Manchee and Paul Sergeant. The girls eight and under medley relay team placed third, the girls nine and 10-year-old medley relay placed second and the girls 18 and 14-year-old freestyle relay placed third. Uxbridge Swim Club had the largest qualifying group at the meet. YMCA floor hockey game the Red Wings and the Mighty Ducks played to a 9-9 tie. Matt MacMaster racked up a hat trick for the Red Wing with Jason Lown, Darryl Dal- ton and John Barton each add- ing doubles. Eric Bird fired in four goals for the Mighty Ducks with Jason Cruikshank adding two and Evan Bertrand, Steven Doan and Jonathon Rogalski each poppingin singles. Local filly grabs purse at Sires Stakes Gold Series Jo Car Lyn, a three-year-old filly, co-owned by William James of Blackstock and Keith Rudkin of Bobcaygeon raced out of the starting gate to claim the victory in one of the elimi- nations of the Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series held at Mo- hawk Raceway. The victory was in one of the four $15,350 elimination rounds. Jo Car Lyn circled the oval in 1:67.1 to earn a berth in the $100,000 Gold Series Final, held yesterday (May 24). Driven by Reg Gassien, Jo Car Lyn left from post position five and burst immediately into the lead. Marian Seelster came up to challenge on the outside at the half-mile marker, but was easily held at bay by Jo Car Lyn in the closing strides to score the three-quarter length win. Jo Car Lyn is trained by Mr. James. She is the daughter of Viking Tiger out of the Keystone Pocza dam Mary of Scotland. The win increased her lifetime earnings to $104,302 with the $7,805 purse cheque. Newmarket and Vaughan Port Perry's rep fastball team in the York-Durham League have been working hard in prac- tices and so far their efforts have been rewarded as they moved to a 4-0 league record. Last week with a road win in Newmarket and a home field beauty of a game win as well. On a cold May 17 in Newmar- ket our lads endured for a 12-9 victory. Some defensive lapses on fly balls and too many walks was overshadowed by key strikeouts and aggressive base running to steal our victory. Pitchers Tim Jones and Mike LeFort combined for just three hits while notching 12 strike- outs for Port Perry. Mike also belted a solo homer in the third to helpin the win. - Offensively Matt Clayton slammed a double to right field while Matt Skerratt, Wiseman, Mike Milligan and Tim chipped in with singles. Mike Koury scored two runs af- ter free passes and Jeff Kane also walked twice. ~ Fans were treated to a superb fastball display in Port Perry on May 19 as the Vaughan pitcher zoomed his pitches in for 15 strikeouts. In a display of in- tense concentration on defense, however, our players gave no ground and our pitchers and catcher Matt Skerratt guarded home plate skillfully in tagging out four runners at home plate! Other good defensive plays were by Jeff at first on a hard line drive and by Tim (from shortstop) on two hard-hit balls. Team coaches were en- couraged as well by our outfield back-up plays and our infield Mike base coverage. Offensively we managed just three hits - an opposite field triple on the fairline by Matt Skerratt, a double by Jeff and a "beauty" bunt single by Mike Wiseman on a "squeeze-play" to bring in the winning run for Taylor-Ford. Again aggressive base running was a key to the victory. Pitchers Mike LeFort and Tim permitted just four hits while striking out 10 batters. Stuart Cochrane, = Graham Dick, Matt Breen and Steve Ma- cLennan have been enthusiasti- cally learning both at the plate and in the field for Port Perry and also contributed to the hard fought 3-1 victory. Pitching and defense lead Gamblers to two victories The Greenbank Gamblers re- corded a pair of wins this past week behind good team defense and the excellent pitching of Mark Goreski and Jim Chil- vers. While the weather for both games was cool, both Goreski and Chilvers were definitely hot as they allowed only a single run in the two encounters. At the Port Perry diamond on a cool Tuesday night (no prob- lem with mosquitoes) Mark Go- reski tossed a three hitter and struck out nine eagle batters in a 6-0 gambler win. Todd Wilbur and Lawrie Wil- liams split the Eagle pitching with Wilbur, John Butler and Steve Durham collecting the Eagle hits. For Greenbank, Jim Chilvers and Bill Buys each had a pair of hits with Terry Till, Trevor Till, Rod Real, Mark Goreski, Brian Till and and Paul Goreski each hitting safely. In Greenbank Park on Thurs- day evening the Gamblers eked out a tight 2-1 win over Oshawa O'Tooles. Oshawa out- hit Greenbank by a 6-3 margin but the Gamblers made the most of their three hits to hang on for the victory. In the bottom of the third in- ning, Brian Till drew a one out base on balls. With Paul Gore- ski at the plate, till broke for 9-10 Mites On Wednesday, May 19 Greenbank Variety won their second game of the season. This game they met Philp Pontiac Buick. Julie Lamb did a great job for Greenbank hitting a double, bringing Joey Sanchez home and putting Alaina Davis on third. Also Jennifer Hancock, Sara Hansen, Adam Olivero, Melissa Hooker and Adam Lamb had great hits for Green- bank. Philp Pontiac had great plays from their team, with a home run by Greg, great catch by their pitcher Donny Sherriffs. Both teams played very well. With a final score of 18-11 for Greenbank Variety.
