Agricultural Employment Services optimistic about summer job prospects By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Student response to agricul- tural employment is strong this year, according to Agricultural Employment Services student recruitment officer Leanne Philip. Miss Philip, who is working * for the second straight year at the Port Perry office as a liason between farmers and students has been out recruiting student farm help for the past month. "There has been great re- sponse so far. Students are very interested in this program," she told the Port Perry Star. The main focus of her work at this time of year, is targeting the potential student employ- ees. "Currently I am visiting the schools and making presenta- tions to students. I go to all the secondary schools in the region, 16in all," she added. She said she focusses on the school kids before exams begin and have them registered for the program. When this intital task is com- pleted she will visit the farmers and seek out potential employ- ers for those students regis- tered with the program. Although it is a little early in the season to know how success- ful the program will be this year, Rolly Coy, manager of Ag- ricultural Employment Servic- es, East Central district, said he isoptimistic. "It is alittle early right now to tell, but I do anticipate some problems with finding employ- ment for some students," Mr. Coy said. He said there has been a steady decline in employment in the agricultural field due to a number of factors.' He cited technical changes and improvements on farms and farm machinery as having an impact on the demand for hand help. "The technology has restrict- ed the work available, by red- ducing manual labor that stu- dents used to do," he said. Such things as the switching from square to round bales and high moisture hayage have de- creased the demand for manual Authorized Dealer Cetol DEK | sikkens A New Superior Wood Finish For Your Deck * Its protective barrier repels water --ar- Ml * Effectively penetrates and protects wood surfaces. em -- mm-------- --1/ PAINT & WALLPAPER -- 2 295 Ritson Rd. "I am optimistic there will be work on farms, but how much comes through the office is ques- tionable. There are not a lot of excellent prospects, but I'm hopeful," Mr. Coy told the Star. One, source of seasonal em- ployment which has increased recently is in horticultural en- terrpises. There are more peo- ple involved in this and with this trend towards growers, hand helpis needed. "It is something we noticed a trend in. It is increasing, not necessarily in Port Perry itself, but in a broader area," Mr. Coy added. - ate, CENTRAL EH AR ER I ER RR CEE gt 2 . wee FREE £ COFFEE (no take out orders please) L7\ .
