"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 26, 1993 - 7 Letter to the editor Need to honor Mother Nature To the Editor: Thank you for your accurate coverage of the SCOPE meeting held in Greenbank on May 16. Emotions there did run high, as one might expect when a com- munity is threatened by short- sighted promoters of "profit-at- any-cost." es, one might forgive con- cerned residents for unleashing resentment and anger in the face of losing their peaceful, ru- ral atmosphere and the wild marshland they cherish to an invasion by 50 pieces of heavy equipment operating 40 hours per week for years and years to come. Tempers might under- standably flare at the prospect of noise, dust and habitat de- struction where once there were peaceful farms and undisturbed wetland. And yet, the worst behavior at that meeting came not from residents but from the council- lor and mayor who represent them and who support the heavy equipment training oper- ation. Ken Carruthers angrily told one woman to "shut up" and then pronounced the meeting as nothing more than a shouting match. He dismissed SCOPE (Scugog Citizens' Organization for the Preservation of the Envi- ronment) as irrelevant compar- ing it with Zero Garbage, whom he slammed for disbanding once the dump issue moved away from Scugog. His logic seemed to be that unless we take on every envi- ronmental issue in every corner of the world, and don't let up, our opposition can't be taken se- riously on a proposal that threatens our own neighbor- hood. Well, Mr. Carruthers, many a community has rallied together to support a burned- out family, but once that family is back on its feet, they don't go out looking for more victims fur- ther afield on which to inflict their do-gooderism. No, Mr. Carruthers, we'll take on one issue at a time and we'll do what we can in our small corner of the planet to preserve the fragile ecosystem. We'll do the things we're capa- ble of: compost, reuse, recycle, to the law. wedding anniversary. action in improving the roads in th Ltd. poultry operation at R. Yours sincerely, Sandra James-Mitchell, Greenbank Geranium sale a huge success To the Editor: - First, let me thank all the folks that pre-ordered their Ge- raniums from us. The response was simply overwhelming. We had ordered 500 of these "bedutiful plants from Robert Camazzola and when we had filled the pre-orders we in fact had less than 100 to sell in front ofthe post office and at the Kins- men Hall. The few flowers that remained unsold, sold at the Kinsmen Hall and never reached the Post Office. To all our friends that were disappointed, our profound apologies, but never in our wild- est dreams did we expect the tremendous support that the community gave us with this project. The Kinsmen promise that next year we will have a few hundred more so that no one will be left out. Thanks again to those who supported this project and our most sincere apologies to those who were disappointed. Larry Kendall, Geranium Chairman, Kinsmen Club of Port Perry.
