There was a notice that a firm will be aerial spraying for Gypsy Moth in the areas of Scugog, Uxbridge and Pickering from May 17 - June 30, 1993. They are using two sprays of BT (Bocillus Thurin- giensis) and/or a spray of Carba- ryl Sevin. BT is a parasite bacterium propelled by inert materials which are far from inert. These propellents, which are not list- ed can include everything from contaminants, emulsifiers, sol- vents, preservatives to antivol- atility agents. In other words Poisons. Carbaryl Sevin is a chemical which is known to cause cancer and other auto immune diseas- es. With aerial spraying there can be drifts of spray up to 100 miles away, depending on the winds. Since Scugog is one of the spray areas, the drift will certainly hit the lake, not to mention the drift over our homes. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Mus- koka area, where they have drastically cut back on spray- ing, there is no need for Gypsy Moth spraying this year as there are many fewer eggs - due to winter 'kill and nature can- handle the infestation, should therebeone. ° It is time people began to search out safe alternatives and stop the use of harmful pesti- cides, insecticides and herbi- cides before many more chil- dren and adults become immune deficient as my child has. "Ann Adams, Port Perry Surprised by quality of applicants "To the Editor: After deciding to move my small business to Port Perry re- cently, I was confronted with two tasks which I have always thought to be unpleasant. First, I had to inform my staff that we were relocating out of town. This made the commute to work unreasonable for them and they were unable to contin- ue working for me. This brings me to the second task, hiring a new staff. This would normally include screening endless phone calls from people who for one reason or another had no business call- ing in the first place, usually they were lacking in some nec- essary ability which was clearly stated in the ad. Then there were the people who just out and out lied about their abilities (how long did they think it would take me to find out that they can't really type more than 10 wpm). In short, hiring is usu- ally a time consuming and frus- trating proposition with limited results. This brings me to the reason for my letter. After placing an ad in your paper I was over- whelmed with the number of quality calls I received. Every- one who called was articulate and presented themselves in a very pleasant and professional manner. All applicants who came to the office again present- ed themselves professionally in dress and manner. To say it was difficult to make a final decision Ducky will be looking for the Phantom at race From Page 6 If you see my crew tell them you are behind them and come on down to the lake front or be along the river to cheer them along...at their age they need all the help they can get. Well Pete that just about wraps up this note. Come on Scugog - Support the race and in doing so you will be helping to preserve a small piece of our lo- cal history. To The Phantom...Meet you at the start of the race at 7 a.m. and may the best old bird win. Yours in paddling (or pud- dling). "Ducky" would be quite an understate- ment. There was not one person who submitted a resume or ap- plication that I would not have hired. Unfortunately I had only one position to fill. It's a sad state of affairs when so many amply qualified people are searching for work in a country such asours.
