"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Letter to the editor A I UTA Open letter to the mayor To the Editor: Open Letter to Mayor Ho- ward Hall On Wednesday, May 19, I was one of 10 Marsh Hill resi- dents to receive an award from the Wetland Habitat Agree- ment Natural Area Steward- ship Program as landowners who have pledged to protect Beaver River Wetlands on our properties. The awards to Brock Town- ship recipients were presented by Brock Councillor, Reg Starr. You, sir, were scheduled to make the presentation to the Scugog recipients but you chose to leave the reception prior to the presentations. As a result of your absence, the Brock Town- ship Councillor was required to Environment Week Is June 6-12 To the Editor: Environment Week is coming up June 6-12. The week's theme is "It's Up To All Of Us," the idea being that preserving the envi- ronment for the future is up to every single one of us - not "someone else" or "them." Scu- gog Library will have a display during the week, and there will be plenty.of handouts available on a wide variety of environ- mental topics. Durham Environmental Net- work is jumping the gun by a few days, and hosting an educa- tional forum on NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) on Thursday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lecture Theatre at G.L. Roberts High School in south Oshawa. Any- one concerned about NAFTA's expected impacts on the envi- ronment, labor, agriculture, and our social institutions, is encouraged'to come - the event is free, and it is open to the pub- lic. For more information about the NAFTA _ event, call 985- 3225. Janet Banting EMMERSON 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. LIL 189 (416) 985-7306 make the awards presentation. As Mayor of Scugog, you are supposed to be representing all citizens of the township. Your * dereliction of duty was noted by all those present at the Sunder- land reception. Is your personal animosity to the residents of Marsh Hill, who are opposing the proposed Operating Engi- neers' eavy construction equipment training institute in their community, making it im- possible for you to carry out your duties at mayor? Are you unable to take part in an award presentation, honoring Marsh Hill residents for their personal efforts to protect and preserve wetlands, because you persist in describing these residents as NIMBYS pretending to be envi- ronmentalists? What other rea- son would cause you to miss a photo opportunity? Mr. Hall, you should open your mind and accept the fact that the Natural Heritage League and the Ontario Gov- ernment have recognized us as landowners who care about the environment. Are we expecting too much to have our own may- or acknowledge our achieve- ment?
