Oshawa Mackies picked up six runs in a disatrous first inning, off three past balls, four walks and two hits, to take an early 6- 0 lead. In the third inning the "An- gels" got one back, on a single by Tracy Smith, a sacrifice by bunt Laura Puggeon, to allow Joyce Parkinson to single home the run. The Angels got another run in the fourth inning on Miara Sku- ja's triple, then scored on an in- Nonquon Jets win two straight games With only three games played in the 1993 Victoria County men's slo-pitch regular season the Nonquon Jets have already scored 79 runs and, after losing the season opener, have put to- gether two straight wins. Many of the runs the Jets have produced thus far can be directly attributed to overall team speed. Though it's true that hitting ability fluctuates from one game to the next, speed is a constant which coach Jim Wills feels helps his club in two ways. "It (speed) gives the guys con- fidence that's the important thing," said Wills. "Maybe even more important though is what it does to other teams." "We've got enough speed on this team that when we start running people early it can real- ly frustrate and confuse the oth- er team," he said. The most recent display of the Jet's speed came two weeks ago when Wills' club scored 14 ~ times in the first inning en route to a 28-9 win over the Can- nington Royals at Greenbank fields. ~.. Terry Williamson, Mike Enzi and Dave Smith made up the "top third of the Jets' batting or- | der and each did his part to get into scoring position for the number four and five hitters Bob Fielding and Bill Sherman, who didn't disappoint. Both went five for five at the Youth boys by Judy MacSween In the Youth Boys softball last week, Perfect Heating came up with the win against Lake Scugog Lumber. Jason Cooper, Mike Phoenix and Tra- vis Howell all hit home runs and went three for three at the plate. Chad Yakeley also hit three for three including a dou- ble. Sean Fletcher and Steven Martin both played a good de- fensive ball game. Lake Scugog Lumber had Mike Stevens not only hit two home runs, he did an excellent job on first. Brennan Malcolm played great behind the plate and Greg Langford's bat was working well, hitting two for three. 7-8 Mites Cottrell's Cuspids won their third straight game by defeat- ing Schildt Machining 13-12 on May 24. Schildt Machining was pow- erful at bat with good hitting by Mathew Williams, Kaleb Beer and Jennifer Corbett. Justin Cottrell, Keenan Geer and Kenny Britt were strong at bat for Cottrell's Cuspids, with Justin also making a good play in field. Both teams played very well and didn't let a little rain show- er dampen their enthusiasm. plate and drove in a pair of runs each in the Jets' first-inning up- rising. Fielding, currently batting a torrid .857, said the team's speed helps in getting ajump on the opposition. "If you've got guys running, you can score on them quick and get them down early," he said. An early lead is one way speed has helped the Jets' this season but it also stretches sin- gles to doubles, doubles to trip- les and can score runs on short fly balls. The Jets recognize all the benefits of having a fast team and have used them to their ad- vantage, scoring more than a third of their 79 total runs with the top three batters in the or- der. Wills said after the win over the Royals that he's fortunate to be able to mix his line-up from one game to the next and field a team that is both "fleet of foot" and sound defensively. - He also feels that if his club can do well early in the season it will build confidence heading downthe stretch. "Last year we lost some games inthe first part of the season-that we shouldn't have," "he said. "If we can get a couple more solid wins like the last two in the early going we're going to be tough to beat at the end of the season." The Jets will travel to Can- nington June 8 for a rematch with the Royals before heading to Woodville the next night where theyll try to make amends for the thrashing they suffered at the hands of the Ma- roonsin the season opener. Angels lose two games , . f field out by Mandy Porter. In the third inning Oshawa picked up a run off two hits, and a past ball to score, then again in the fourth they added two more, on a walk and two hits, from there on, Scugrog from the second inning on, we played even strongrer, 3-3. The final score was 9 3 Oshawa. Miara Skapa with a triple and a double, a run scored, didn't hurt the team with aggressive Rase running, Tracy Smith picking up from where she left off last year had two hits, as did - Kim Stewart, a double and a single, Joyce Parkinson had two singles. We've added three new players to the team since play- ing Oshawa Double "Bs" - Lau- ra Duggeon, Amber Wood and Miara Skuja. These girls are ag- gressive players. The Scugog "Angels" record- ed their third loss of the season last night to the Cobourg "An- gels," 14-5. The Scugog "Angels" held Co- bourg to a 3:3 tie at the end of two innings of play. Then the roof fell in as Cobourg scored six runs in the third. Scugog got off to a quick start as Laura Duggeon was a hit bat- ter, then Nancy McConnell and Gena Spence both walked to load the bases, for Joyce Parkin- son, as she proceeded to hit a triple driving in all three run- ners. Cobourg came right back on four straight hits and a walk to score three runs, to tie the game 3-3. Then Cobourg exploded for six runs on two walks, an error, and five hits as well as some timely good base running, to put six runs across, and take a 9-3 lead. They added four more in the fifth and one in the sixth, before Port Perry (Scugog) scored two in the seventh. Tracy Smith got on with a sin- gle to start the seventh, Dug- geon walked, Nancy McConnell doubled scoring Smith, Gena Spence singled, scoring McCon- nell toend the game down 14-5. Tracy Smith and Amber Wood each had two hits, Laura Duggeon, Nancy McConnell, Gena Spence, all had singles. Oshawa S & H Fabs are in town next Sunday, then the "Angels" go to Cobourg for a re- turn engagement. The team travels to Bowmanville on Mon- day.
