People throughout the world are grappling with the complex- ities of racial tolerance, said Stephen Lewis, former Canadi- an Ambassador to the United Nations. Mr. Lewis was addressing a group of Health Care profes- sionals at a conference at Dur- ham College on Thursday enti- tled "Cultureis not Color." The day-long seminar dealt with the issues and trends in a multi-cultural and multi-racial society. Mr. Lewis told members of the audience that the issues they are grappling with in the seminar are the same issues that people are struggling with throughout the world. "These issues around race and diversity are struggles that unite us all. They are common throughout the world," he said. "One may be more extreme than the other, but they are all of the same pattern. Everybody 18 wrestling with these ques- tions throughout the world." Mr. Lewis said the world is "pre-occupied" with the issues of culture, language and ethnic- ity. "Race and culture are among the most seriousissues and they are inescapable on a daily ba- sis," he said, n 0 = 'a Fy "«\ Cis 12 2] Pak QO 5 Kk <% s A $ ' 3 reg. $46.00 ( NOW Despite the prevalence of the issues in today's changing socie- ty, Mr. Lewis said we are reluc- tant to accept this change. But he said the change is occuring quickly as 50 per cent of the world's population will be peo- ple of color by 2005. "This enormous shift must be accommodated through inclu- sion," he said. "We must deal with the issues with sensitivi- ty." Although we are slowly be- coming a more tolerant society, Mr. Lewis said "the improve- ments have been so microscopic, they aren't noticeable." Mr. Lewis outlined a plan for society to follow if it wishes to become more tolerant to the ra- cial changes. He stressed the need for all middle and senior management people to "be on board" in the ef- fort to accept change, as well as offering sensitivity training on culture and race for all company personel. "Everybody must be involved in the organization." He also stressed the need for people to become comfortable with the issues of race and the different cultures by setting up support groups within the work- place. Although these methods will teach tolerance to adults in the workplace, Mr. Lewis said it was imperative to learn at a young age. "It should be dealt with ideal- ly at school at the very earliest grades," he said. But he said the schools are of- ten failing in offering this edu- cation. He pointed to the fact that most school boards have the guidelines but fail in getting the message into the class- rooms. Mr. Lewis called on the gov- ernments to become involved in the process to provide guide- lines, materials and back-up. Although he acknowledged society is beginning to accept the cultural differences in the world, he said the process is very slow. But he still remains confident that it will happen. "Justice and honor will pre- vail, but it will take us a long time to get there," he said.
