a ---- o_o "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" ET a a-- ---- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 1, 1993 - 7 Letters to the editor Misuse of public funds unacceptable To the Editor: For those who may have missed the latest local news, the Durham Regional Council has approved a severance package for themselves. Vote them out and they get paid for it. With a faltering economy, a drastic reduction in transfer payments from the provincial government and a shrinking tax base due to the struggling business sector, one would hope that the council would be more considerate. With the threat of layoffs and the need for all sec- tors of the economy to (as a min- imum) maintain the present price and wage structure, to feather their nest with badly needed tax dollars is unaccepta- ble. What's to stop them from increasing the package, in the future, to a years salary and on and on. If this group of public ser- vants is bent on exploiting the public purse, other individuals Took exception to To the Editor: I would ask that you please allow me to express my excep- tion to your criticism of the Bob Rae - Floyd Laughren budget which appeared in your editori- al of May 26. Although you express very strong resentment to the way we are all being taxed perhaps you could offer some practical suggestions as to how the bud- get could be reduced or do you believe that this is necessary? The Rae government is only asking that we the taxpayer re- pay the debts that have been ac- cumulated over the last 120 years by consecutive Liberal or Conservative governments. Thank God we have a New Democratic government that has the courage to let us know that enough is enough and that we can't go on buying more and paying later any longer. The time to pay later is now. The Rae government should be con- gratulated and encouraged to continue to clean up the finan- cial mess that they inherited from 125 years of successive Liberal or Conservative govern- Environmental Fair a great endeavor From Page 6 on environmental investments. Currently in Canada, green industries represent important economic potential. It is esti- mated that environmentally- related enterprise is already worth $7 billion to $10 billion a year, and employs 150,000 peo- ple. As Canadians we have a chance to build on these suc- cesses and to become world leaders in developing new tech- nologies that promote better en- vironmental management and clean-up. We need a federal govern- ment that acts decisively to in- tegrate environmental con- cerns into the way we do business. The current approach to the economy is not sustaina- ble. Environmentally friendly economic policies promote effi- ciency and innovation and gen- erate jobs. Sincerely, Lucy Rybka-Becker, Federal NDP Candidate for Durham or groups with access to these tax dollars will be saying, "Me Too." Hopefully, the taxpayers in the towns and townships will let these Durham Regional Council members know that this misuse of public funds is unacceptable. Sincerely, N.R.
