8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 1, 1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The Reform Pa arty's leader waded into the heartland of NDP support last week looking for converts. And it was no coincidence that Preston Manning's visit to Oshawa coincided with the Ca- nadian Auto Workers decision to cut ties with the NDP. "Many union people are also looking for more democracy in both the union movement and the political system. They want more accountable union leaders and political leaders. Union members will find more com- mitment to democracy and ac- countability in the Reform Par- ty than in the NDP or other parties," he said. Mr. Manning chastised the CAW for spreading false infor- mation about the Reform Party. He attacked a recent publica- tion by the autoworkers which he called "90 per cent untrue." He placed the blame squarely on the NDP for spearheading the attack. "If union members want to Reform Party leader Preston Manning was in Oshawa last week to gamer support for his party for the upcoming federal election. Mr. Manning is shown with Durham candidate lan Smyth. SENTRA, # SR RICKS BARBER oi0P Men's & Ladies Preston Manning visits Oshawa in wake of auto workers' decision know about the Reform alterna- tive, they should investigate the Reform Party themselves. The last place they should look for unbiased information is to NDP-affiliated union leaders and the publications they con- trol." Mr. Manning noted that it was obvious that union mem- bers were becoming disillu- sioned by their old affiliations and are looking for alternatives. He encouraged union mem- bers to cut ties and vote as an in- dividual instead of along union lines. "Union members should be free to look at all of their politi- cal options, and we hope that many will look to the Reform Party," he said. And this is what is happen- ing, he said, pointing to the number of people throwing sup- port behind the relatively new political party. In fact, he said he hasbeen en- couraged by the number of un- ion members, especially auto- workers, who have made the switch. "We've been encouraged by the number of union people who are taking a hard look at us and we hope that we translate that into some support and do well in some of the areas that have tra- ditionally been NDP." The visit to Oshawa was more than a little ironic as well. Mr. Manning was on hand to offi- cially open the constituency of- fice of Andrew Davies, a Reform Party candidate. This 'office was once the campaign headqudr- ters for NDP leader Ed Broad- bent. "TI have Broadbent's old office, and now I want his old seat in parliament too," Mr. Davies said.
