A -- I I Ard NU ---- BE cada 12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 15, 1993 EA RR Re SP RRL SAA fr red CINE RSV STSE NSE IN "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" With the high school drop out rate at an alarmingly high level, educators are attempting to solveit at the grassroots level. More than 1,200 students participated in a national Stay- In-School conference in Edmon- ton from May 14 to 16. Among the participants were 11 students from Port Perry High School, who were spon- sored by the Port Perry Rotary Club and Oshawa Motor City Kinsmen. Trevor Hayman, a Grade 11 student from P.P.H.S., said it was a worthwhile conference in which students from across Canada got together to share views and exchange ideas. Among the issues discussed were self-esteem, day care, womens' issues and native is- sues. For most of the weekend the students were divided into groups where they participated in the various workshops and provided ideas. Trevor says it was a valuable experience as he was able to hear the thoughts and ideas of youth from across the country. Self-esteem and the fact that students can make a difference was a major focus of the confer- ence. This was probably the most important message Trevor brought home as well. "There was a positive sense that things can be changed," he said. "We can make a differ- ence.' Trevor says there is often a negative image projected con- cerning students. "I want to show that that's not the reality. It's fiction and we can make a difference," he said. This conference was only the beginning for the Port Perry GRADUATE Melissa & Rachel Kroonenberg are pleased to announce the Graduation of their mother, Angie Kroonenberg, from the Medical Administrator Course and also for making the Dean"s List. We're very proud of you Mom. Congratulations also come from your Mom, Dad, sister & brothers. PPHS students attend Stay in School conference group as they will now seek to implement some of the ideas brought home from the confer- ence. Although the drop out rate in the area is extremely low, they will still work to make it even lower. Statistics show that not only does P.P.H.S. possess an ex- tremely low drop out rate, but Durham schoolsin general have alow rate. Students at P.P.H.S. will have a chance to provide input into the drop out problem next fall when they participate in a school-wide survey. This survey willidentify areas which need to be addressed. The stay-in- school group will then assess the feedback and take action. GRADUATE Esther J.
