Regional Clerk pleased to greet two ladies who had moved away, the former Mrs. Elizabeth Stichmann of Toronto, and Mrs. Alva Thomp- son of Richmond Hill. Letters of regret were received from for- mer members who were unable to attend. Mrs. Dorothy Mar- tyn, the first president, could not attend because of her very ill brother, Murray Williams, who passed away a couple of days later. Mrs. Reta Rodman did not wish to leave her very ill niece, Beth, who had enter- tained us during her youth with her musieal talent. The committee in charge spared no time or effort in pro- "ducing a varied and entertain- ing program, which started with a lively group in a skit dressed up as colorful chicks on their way to Colonel Sanders kitchen, but carried a notice to express the opinion of their des- tiny. Comic and appropriate read- ings were given by Helen Hor- top, Clara Dowson, and Marion Carter. Surprise Life Memberships were presented to Helen Hortop and Jan Gerrow. Beryl Pearce conducted her trick "Frog" story which tested good memories in an effort to re- mainin line to the last. Betty Reader and Helen Red- man had gone through 45 years of records by secretaries to re- call many work periods, unusu- al events and many comic inci- dents involving different members and occasions. The president, Marilyn Tripp, brought her son who is studying photography and got lots of practice in handling the various cameras. You may see some special prints in the Port Perry Star when they are fin- ished. A guest at each table received a plant in a fancy container made by the talented Clara Dowson. Now, we'll welcome new members and work along with the former reliable until we hope to celebrate our 50th, with THE LUMINA new experiences and a job well done for the church and com- munity. The next event of interest to the community was a Reader family picnic to celebrate the arrival of this family from Eng- land te the Head of the Island in 1844. Apparently three of the some moved south but the oth- ers intermarried with neigh- bors, gradually spread to other areas. About 35 years ago, two Reader ladies organized picnics in Oshawa, Bowmanville and Peterborough, but responsibili- ty dropped until this year when younger members longed for a reunion. Hence, three ambi- tious ladies of later families, Jan (Raymond) Reader, Betty (Nelson) Reader, and Doreen (Reader) Ashbridge got busy lo- cating names and addresses for letter or phone calls. The result was a family picnic of 83 mem- bers meeting at the original farm homestead at the stone house on 7A and proceeding on a perfect day of Sat., to the Head Museum Church built in 1860 and carried on by many earlier members of this family. After a sumptuous lunch, there was much visiting and study of pictures. Of course, there were many regrets too from relatives unwell, or with other obliga- tions. But we hope to see them next year now that the hard part has been done. This all adds interest to the restoration of the "Head" Church this sum- mer by the Museum Board. Mr. and Mrs. Reg. Jones from the west are visiting with mem- bers of the Redman and Carter families as Reg. was a brother of the late Mrs. Ethel Redman at the "Head". Now for Scugog Island Unit- ed Church news. On Sunday, there was a presentation of Re- ligion in Life Badges to Brown- ies - Emily Davis, Sara Davis and Christina Reader; Guides - Melinda McPherson and Adrienne Reader. Practice on Thur., 8 p.m. On Sunday, June 27, the church service will be conducted by Rev. John Brown. Sunday night there will be a Strawberry Supper for the United Church. I have no doubt that, as we plan our holidays, we spend a great deal of time considering guide books of one kind and an- other. I think we don't always realize what a long history these have. As long ago as 1770, Thomas West wrote "A Guide to the Lakes", that is, the Lake District as we know it. His language is often very quaint by our standards. For in- stance, he wrote of "sweet re- treats and enchanted regions of calm repose" and that here one could find "objects to enlarge the mind to contemplation". Well, I think we might not ex- press is quite like that nowa- days. Yet, was not his idea ab- solutely right? We do sometimes tend to rush about too much, even on holiday. I know, we say "a change is as good as a rest" and a change of scenery and of people can be of enormous benefit to us, but, don't let's forget, too, the impor- tance of having "time to stand and stare", of quietness and contemplation. This is. part of the truly recreative power of a holiday and what can make it different from our normal rou- tine.
