"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 30 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 22, 1993 The Williams family was one of the earliest settlers in the Port Perry area, having built their home in 1830 on Conces- sion 7 of Reach Township (now R.R. 8 Scugog Township). Murray Williams was born Feb. 8, 1907 at the family home- stead. He was the son of the late Alonzo and Ethel Williams. Murray passed away in his 87th ear on I'riday, June 4, 1998 fol- owing a brief illness at the Oshawa General Hospital. The car industry and Murray were a perfect match. He loved meeting people, talking with G. Murray Williams them, getting to know them, be- coming their friend and, almost as an aside, selling them a car. Not just any car, mind you, but the car he decided was the "right" one for them. He started in the car business in 1929 as a salesman for Har- old Archer whose dealership was located where the present Royal Bank building is in Port Funeral services were held for the late George Buchanan Freeman of Scugog Island on Tuesday, April 20, 1993 in the McDermott-Panabaker Chapel of the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry, with the Rev. Ron Van. Auken of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Mr. Free- man died peacefully on Satur- day, April 17 at the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry. George Freeman was born in Cookstown, Ireland on July 28, 1899, to Ann and Samuel Free- man, the youngest of their 10 children. On March 31, 1926 George married Iris Powell and they moved to Canada, settling in Winnipeg where he worked for various farmers. With the building of the Hydro Dam at Antikokan they moved to Onta- rio where he went to work on the construction of the dam. Later moving to Toronto, George worked at several jobs, including the building of Maple Leaf Gardens. In March 1939 when the Sec- ond World War came along they moved from Toronto to Scugog Island on the Head Road. There they farmed and drew milk into Goodes Dairy in Port Perry with a team of horses. Later George oe George Buchanan Freeman got a job driving a milk trans- port for farmers and moved from the Head Road to Conces- sion 10 West where he contin- ued to farm and drive his own milk truck and deliver ice in the summer. Before retiring he would work for the Township of Scu- gog Roads Department and the County of Ontario Roads De- partment, finishing his career working at McCallum's Trans- portdriving a car transport. Throughout his life George was very musical. As a young boy he played the pipes and toured Ireland with pipe bands his father trained. When he came to Canada he trained both a pipe and a flute band and played the accordian as well. His group of musicians played on the original Bluenose when it was in Toronto Harbour. George was predeceased by his wife Iris who died March 31, 1990, their 64th wedding anni- versary. He is survived by his three sons George and his wife Ethel, Roy and his wife Betty Ann, all of Scugog Island, and Don and his wife Dorothy of Bobcaygeon, eight grandchil- dren and four great- grandchildren. In 1946 he started his own business, Williams Motor Sales, at the corner of Queen and John Streets, the present location of the 1.G.A. In1956 he moved to his new building on Highway 7A, presently occu- pied by Larry Taylor. Murray's business was built on repeat customers and he took great pride in the fact that families had regularly purchased cars from him for over 50 years. Ford recognized his success by awarding him a total of 13 Ford Dealer Achievement Awards as well as trips to Japan, Germa- ny, England and St. Maartens. His business received its 25 year plaque in 1971. In 1977 he sold his car dealership for a well earned "retirement." His last car sale was delivered the week of his death. He married Doris (Nesbitt) on Sept. 15, 1936 and Port Perry became their home town. Here they raised three children Jeanne, John and Grant. Mur- ray had belonged to the Oddfel- lows, Port Perry Curling Club and supported the Scout/Guide Hall, Port Perry Minor Hockey and Port Perry United Church. Since his "official" retirement from the car business, winters were spent at their home in Nokomis, Florida. Many new friendships were made and Murray often acted as "tour guide" and "designated driver," making sure visitors and new friends got where they had to , be it the mall, church, the octor or the latest "hot" restau- rant. One stereotype Murray fit perfectly was that of a grandfa- ther. His grandchildren were very special to him and he spoiled them unashamedly.
