"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Industry should help with recycling, says Herrema PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 29, 1993 - 9 It's always worth the trip to... PHILP By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Industries should share in the cost of recycling, Durham's chairman says. Gary Herrema made these statements during a regional council meeting in which advo- cates for the recycling program attempted to persuade him not to cancel the blue box program. Last month Chairman Herre- ma hinted that the road side re- cycling program could be on the chopping block in a way to save money. In May, Chairman Herrema indicated that as much as $5 million could be saved annually ifthe programis slashed. The region is seeking ways to compensate for the lost revenue resulting from the Ontario gov- ernment's cutbacks. Chairman Herrema called on the industries to do their part to subsidize the recycling pro- grams. He suggested they contribute 50 to 60 per cent of the costs in- stead of 10 percent. "The householder has done his job, the businesses and the government haven't," he said. "We aren't getting any help from government orindustry." According to Chairman Her- rema, it costs approximately $5 million to operate the recycling program in Durham annually, but it generates only 10 per cent of thatin revenue. As an example, it costs $250 per tonne to collect newspaper, but the sale price for recycled paperisonly $25 per tonne. In order to drive home the point, he pulled a recycling bin from under his desk which con- tained selected items. He noted that it takes 42,000 baby food Jars, 29,000 tin cans or 13,000 plastic pop bottles to total a tonne. Chairman Herrema esti- mates the cost of recycling for the region could double to more than 8 0 million annually by the year 2000. But this cost will be too pro- hibitive to the taxpayers of the region, however. "The property taxpayers are being suckered,"" he said. "The people of Durham want to recy- cle and will recycle." In order to stem some of the costs, Chairman Herrema says he is considering cancelling the curbside program, replacing it with community igloos at shop- ping malls. He estimates the cost for col- lection would drop to $1.5 mil- lion per year for collection. Bands needed for gazebo concerts This summer will see "Sun- day Evening Concerts" at the Palmer Park Bandshell. Con- certs are presently being planned during late July and August. The township Parks and Recreation department is seeking a variety of musical, theatrical and general publicin- terest performances. All town- ship clubs and organizations are invited to display their tal- ents. Community bands are en- couraged to promote their bands locally. The concerts do not need to be aimed at any one particular age group. Concerts will stage beginning July 25 and will be running till the beginning of September. Start time is 7 p.m. and perfor- mances will run for approxi- mately one hour. The following dates are avail- able: Aug. 8; Aug. 22; Aug. 29; and Sept. 5. All those groups interested should direct their interest to the Bandshell Co-ordinator at 985-7346.
