10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 29, 1993 Employment office receives $500 from council to help save program The Township of Scugog has thrown its support behind the continuation of an employment office in Port Perry. For the past nine months Vonne Haigh has operated Scu- gog Employment Services, an office to provide job search infor- mation and help to unemployed workers. This was partially funded by the federal government and the Johns Hopkins Society. But the contract to operate the service, which has already seen one extension, has run out. Vonne Haigh, Project Manag- er, appeared before council yes-. terday to seek its support, in- cluding financially, in order to save the program. And she came with some fairly startling sta- tistics in favor of keeping the service alive. A recent survey conducted by Ms. Haigh's office found that 41 businesses had closed in the Township of Scugog in the past 12 months, with 486 people out of work. Arrested on drug charges A R.ID.E. program in Cae- sarea on Saturday resulted in the arrest of two men on various weapon and drug-related charg- es. According to Durham Region- al Police, 175 vehicles were stopped during the daytime check on Regional Road 57. The police personnel included mem- bers of Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Provincial Po- lice. The driver was charged with exceeding the .08 blood alcohol level, possession of cocaine and obstructing po- lice. The passenger was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of a prohibited weap- on. A number of charges under the Highway Traffic Act were also made. "A lot of jobs have evaporated in the last 12 months," she told council. Ms. Haigh said many have relied on the service over the past nine months, but believes there is a need for the office to continue. In order to keep the service alive, she is proposing that the Port Perry-based office serve as a satellite for the existing offices serving the area. This area in- cludes Oshawa, Orillia, Lind- say\Peterborough, and New- market. The offices would participate in a joint funding ar- rangement. The office would serve a one- year mandate to determine the needs of the community. Council later voted in favor of a $500 grant from the Economic Development Committee to go towards the office. Ken Gadsden, Chairman of the Economic Development Committee, said the money was well spent. "If one job is found for a Scu- gog citizen, it more than covers the grant," he said. a, COR at a te A A A Community Cal Marketplace providing space for local non-profit organizations to receive coverage for their important approaching events. Instead, I felt like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood when I found myself unable to utter anything except "My, my, what big shoulders you have." So I left the tough questioning to Pam who asked the NHL's "most eligible bachelor" if he enjoyed his vacation in Nassau. : Despite the fact that we momentarily lost the ability to think intelligently, Peter treated us like royalty, shook our hands, signed autographs, and offered us the use of a golf cart for the day. Since Peter was so kind, it gave us the courage to : approach other players. But I promised myself that before I spoke with Doug Gilmour, I was going to prepare a list of important questions. The fateful moment arrived. Doug and his fellow golfers were taking a rest while waiting for the previous foursome to get off the fairway. We struck up a conversation and things were going great. Just when I was about to start fir- ing the questions off, two students whose job involves handing out complimentary low-alcohol drinks to celebri- ties, approached us to ask if we would take their picture with Doug. He agreed to pose. We agreed to take the photo. And by the time it was all over, so was his break. As he teed up and slammed the ball into orbit, I realized 1 would never get the answers to my questions. Questions like: "If two girls were to attach themselves to your ankles and refuse to let go, would that be considered a handicap in golf?" Questions like: "If the wind is coming out of the north- west at approximately 50 km/h, what combination of mousse/gel/hair spray would you recommend for total hair control." And questions like: "Could you tell if Don Cherry was wearing Skin Bracer aftershave when the two of you shared that infamous moment on Coach's Corner." I! of reall SINE Ease e Ont.
