The rose show and general meeting of Brooklin Horticultu- ral Society was held at the United Church in Brooklin last Wednesday evening. Speaker for the evening was Kevin Wil- liams, whose topic was "Plant/ Health Care". Special awards went to Florence Downey for both the best red rose and white rose. Best decorative -winner was Norma Ingleton. Congratu- lations, ladies! The next general meeting and annuals show will be on August 25. Last Thursday evening, the Community and members of Burns Church were shocked and saddened to hear of the sud- den tragic death of Bill Gard- ner, as a result of an accident on his property in early evening. Bill was highly respected by all who knew him, always taking time to chat with everyone and a cheery smile for all. Bill was a very devout member of the Burns congregation, having served as elder for nearly 27 years. The funeral service was con- ducted on Monday at 2 p.m. from Burns Church, with inter- ment at the adjoining cemetery. Hilda and Walter Hopkins had a surprise visit from Ruth Davidson (Trull) of Toronto one day last week. Ruth was the daughter of Walter and Verna Trull who lived across the road from Hopkins at one time. Ashburn's Canada Day Pic- nic, sponsored by the Commu- nity Centre, is being held at Ashburn Park July 1. It begins at 11 a.m. with a BBQ lunch.
