Gamblers off to International Softball Congress Tournament The Greenbank Gamblers leave on Friday of this week to compete in the Ontario Division of the International Softball Congress Tourney which will be played at Stittsville just outside of Ottawa. Realistically speaking Green- bank stands very little chance of success in this tournament against the O.F.L. Powerhouse Clubs such as the York Gators, Owen Sound, Oshawa Hornets, Waterloo, Stittsville, etc. However, at this tournament last year at Napanee the Gam- blers won a game and lost a pair of close decisions to Napanee Express and Scarborough Thunder, and Greenbank feel the exposure to top rate pitch- ing makes the trip worthwhile. The Gamblers currently hold down second spot in the Camp- bell Division of the Oshawa City and District League, one point behind Oshawa O'Tooles but with two games in hand. Last week saw the team play against the Port Perry Antrim Eagles and Mark Goreski pitched a strong two hit shutout to pace the Gamblers to a 4-0 win. [Lawrie Willhams and John Annis shared the Port Perry pitching duties and struck out eight Gambler batters between them but the home run ball proved to be their down fall. Terry Till led off the first in- ning with a single, moved to sec- ond on a walk to Trevor Till and scored on Don Beaton's line drive to left center. In the second inning Paul Go- reski belted a home run over the left field fence to up the score to 2-0 and with Mike Giroux on base in the third Jim Chilvers hit a line shot over the center Turnto Page 33 Jones perfect in Legion Squirts win over Shamrocks The Port Perry Legion Squirts had a very busy past week and it started off perfect. Chris Jones pitched the entire game and recorded his first per- fect game. Chris struck out 18 batters and allowed no walks. The defence picked up the other three outs to help Chris along the way. The opposing team, Oshawa Shamrocks, were stunned by Chris' accuracy around the plate. Oshawa's pitching was strong also and the Port boys only picked up three hits. Those collecting hits were Mike Versage with a dou- ble and Jeff Ashton and Aaron Lycett with singles. Other base runners for Port, reaching on walks, were Chris, Reid McTag- gart, Mark Richardson and Sean Jeffrey. Final score Port 3, Oshawa 0. The next league game of the week, Scarborough came to Port Perry. This game was com- pletely different from the prewvi- ous night's game as the Port Perry bats were swinging. The boys also displayed fine base running on pass balls and took chances with some great base stealing to score 16 runs in only four innings. Mark Heffern went three for three at the plate, with three singles. Mark Richardson had a triple and sin- gle, Jeff Ashton a single and double, Mike Versage two sin- gles, Ryan McQuade a double and Aaron Lycett, Darryl Dal- ton and Chris Jones all collect- ing singles. Mark Richardson took to the mound for the entire game and recorded eight strike- outs. Defence was strong in this game as the boys only commit- ted one error and allowed Scar- borough only six runs. To finish off the week, we travelled to Peterborough for an exhibition game. The boys played good basic defence. Dar- ryl Dalton at backcatch made a perfect throw to Ryan McQuade to tap out a runner trying to steal second. Michael McLen- nan made a nice catch in right field and made a perfect throw to Mark Heffern at first to dou- ble off a 'runner. Chris Jones and Mark Richardson shared the pitching duties for this one and struck out a total of 10 bat- ters and allowed only two runs. On the offensive side, the boys were all swinging the bat well and left the bad pitches alone to collect a number of walks. Chris had a home run, Mark Heffern two singles and a double, Mike McLennan a triple, Mike Ver- sage a double, Jeff Ashton and Darryl each had two singles while Ryan McQuade, Aaron Lycett and Chris Monsma each collected a single. Reid McTag- gart was the man with all the patience at the plate and picked up four walks. The speedy one made it all the way to third on one of them. Nice sliding, Reid. Port totalled up 17 runs in this one. Next home game for this team is Tuesday, June 29 at 6:30 on the north diamond against East Gwillimbury. Successful week for Peewee MoJacks The Port Perry ModJack Pee- wee rep fastball team had a suc- cessful week last week as they played two league games and came away winners in both. Their first game was on Mon- day, June 21 in Thornhill. The ModJacks started things off by picking up two runs in their half of the first inning but Thornhill came back quickly with three of their own to close out the first inning with a 3-2 lead. The second inning had the ModJacks loading up the bases but only managed to push two runs across to take a 4-3 lead. The seesaw battle continued as Thornhill picked up one run to tie it at four apiece after two. The third inning had both teams picking up three runs to make it a 7-7 game. The Mo- Jack offence stymied a bit and just couldn't get things going while Thornhill scored three runs to take a 10-7 lead. Not a team to give up, the MoJacks rallied to the tune of four runs to take an 11-10 lead that would stand up as their defence did the job and shut down Thornhill the rest of the way. Clayton Brown started the game on the mound for the Mo- Jacks and did an excellent job until he ran out of gas late in the game and Jon Froats came on in relief to hold the Thornhill batters at bay. Doing the hit- ting for the MoJacks were: Marc Versage with a triple and a double, Ryan Hawkins with two singles, Big Nick Skerratt a triple, Ryan Williamson a dou- ble, and singles to Scott Jeffery, Brad Monsma, Owen St. John, Doug Short and Ryan Moynes. The ModJack's next game was on Tuesday, June 22 in Port against Blackstock and the key to the win on this night was the keen eye that everyone showed at the plate as Blackstock sur- rendered a total of 20 walks. While Blackstock pitchers were having trouble throwing strikes, the MoJacks took ad- vantage of it and with some key hits when needed, the MoJacks won handily. The MoJacks sent Jon Froats to the mound for this game and he pitched a fine game as he threw a no-hitter and struck our six while going the distance for the win. Doing the hitting for the ModJacks were; Doug Short with a homer and two doubles, Brad Monsma with two doubles, Aaron Levy with a triple and a single, Jason Best two singles and a single each to Owen St. John, Scott Jeffery, Ryan Moynes, Clayton Brown, Ryan Williamson, Jon Froats and Ryan Hawkins. The MoJacks have no games coming up this week but will re- sume play on Tuesday, July 6 in Port Perry against Thornhill with a 6:30 start, and then trav- el to Oshawa on Wednesday, July 7 with an 8:30 start at the main diamond at Alexandra Park.
