Officer Barrett made the com- ment last week following an in- cident in which a young kitten was deliberately mistreated. The 45-gallon drums con- tained petroleum distillates, sulphuric acid, methylene chlo- ride, xylene and other chemi- cals. Some of the drums rup- tured, contaminating the soil and ground water. Approximately $33,000 was spent cleaning up the area which included excavating the land and hauling away the con- taminated soil. Mr. Young pleaded guilty to one count under the Environ- mental Protection Act for per- mitting the discharge of a con- taminant into the environment and one count relating to per- mitting subject waste to pass from his control to an unli- censed hauler. This is the first time in Onta- rio that a third party has been jailed after substances wereille- gally dumped. GRADUATE PAULA M. WILLES Paula M. Another person ran to the aid of the kitten who took it home to A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of the party who dumped the substances and is due for a trial shortly.
