"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Letters to the editor Thanks to local business sponsors From Page 6 the findings and statistics and, most recently, we have been very fortunate to have Council- lor Ken Gadsden's help in get- ting the office open again. Councillor Gadsdon offered his assistance in finding prem- 1ses and local businesses were asked if they could help in any way. The response has been ex- ceptional and this community is very fortunate to have such civ- ic-minded people in its midst. Those who have "sponsored" our efforts to date are: Drs. Jack Cottrell and Jim Hardy - who have donated-the use of an office in their profes- sional building at 238 Queen Street until Labor Day. Their interest in the project and their kindness is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Jim Grieve, owner of Port Perry I.G.A., who made a dona- tion to cover the cost of tele- phones for the office. When we were discussing the project pro- posal, and the task of trying to stay in operation until funding could be found, he simply hand- ed over a cheque and said "Will this help to get you started?" Jim also does a great deal to- wards helping to provide sum- mer employment for high school students, some of whom return time and again to work in the store. Others who have offered in- valuable help include: John Groenveld of Bridgeport Signs, Tony Janssen and Wendy Bache of Port Perry Printing, John Quackenbush (Cook's Of- fice Equipment, Oshawa) and Bill Sandiford who installed the computer programs. Scugog Employment Services hopes to become an integral part of the community by pro- viding practical guidance to- wards government programs. The nine-month study proved there is a general lack of aware- ness of the wide range of servic- es available and there is a need for people living in small towns and rural communities to be able to get information and ac- cess any scheme which can as- sist in creating jobs, maintain- ing employment levels, or finding work. Thanks to our local sponsors, and their extraordinary kind- ness and generosity in helping to launch Scugog Employment Services. Sincerely, Vonne Haigh Rehashing the pros and cons of abortion To the Editor: The verbatim letter of Gordon Mills, which ran in your June 22, 1993 "Letters" section, was dated and mailed to me April 27, 1993, originally, and was addressed to my initial letter of protest to Mr. Mills concerning his government's incremental infringements upon our demo- cratic rights and freedoms vis a vis a recent report in particular, now being undertaken for feasi- bility by the NDP, regarding spurious and outrageous recom- mendations against our liber- ties, and pocket books, by the Abortion Service Providers. Thus, my "open letter" of reply to him of June 15, 1993. Mr. Mills' politically correct responses actually speak more loudly to, and weigh more im- pactfully upon the relevant is- sues, than any pedestrian rhet- oric I could articulate. But, while I appreciate the decision to disseminate his re- sponse to me for public con- sumption, I must point out that Mr. Mills' subsequent lack of refutation or rebuttal of any or Letter to the Star locates relatives To the Editor: I would like to thank The Port Perry Star for publishing my letter last year requesting infor- mation on the Slater family of West Whitby Township (Brook- lin), Lot 24, Conc 7. Through it we found relatives we never knew we had and they never knew we existed. We met these people and had a wonderful vis- it exchanging bits of info. In our search for Slaters we have not been able to come up with any information on Annie Slater born 1865 died 1946 - married to James Bryson bur- ied Pine Grove Cemetery, Prince Albert, Ontario. Would there be any relatives of Annie Bryson (nee Slater) out there who would be able to fill us in on who her parents were? Did she have brothers and sis- ters? Also Samuel Slater played the fiddle at dances and wed- dings in the early 1900s - would anyone have a picture of Samu- el Slater or any information on him, we would really appreciate letting us know if you do. Thank you, Mrs. D. Stewart, 89 Dawson St., Stratford, Ontario N5A 5M6 all of the substantive points of my follow-up, "open letter" re- ply to him, can only be con- strued as either a further de- flection away from the specificity of my arguments or as a tacit agreement in princi- ple with the fundamentals of those same points. Otherwise to simply rehash the pros and cons of the abor- tion debate is, in this context, really only tantamount to evad- ing the legitimate concerns of citizens, (taxpayers), as to whose rights are next to be sac- rificed on the high altar of polit- ical expediency. Tearing away at abortion, ad infinitum, to no appreciable or satisfactory resolve on any front, on purely philosophical terms, simply renders the ques- tion moot. Why bother? Certainly I am more than de- termined as an individual, how- ever, to stand up and be counted on the side of affirming the sanctity and right of life. That valuation being inviolable. My express concerns sur- rounding these matters of im- portance are, of course, stated for the record in my "open let- ter" to Mr. Mills should anyone interested and desirous of read- ing between the lines of a politi- cian's "non-answer" response to informed inquiry, care to pe- ruse them. Beyond which I feel no re- quirement of further address- ment from me in this forum. As for the venomous and scat- tershot criticism directed to me personally, in the same issue as Mr. Mills, from one of your readers, (an obviously disgrun- tled, self-professed, pro- abortionist whose main thrust against me seemed to suggest that it would be better that un- wanted children be killed in or- der to spare them the ignominy of possible suffering in foster homes), I would only say that while each of us is entitled to express our opinions, we, each of us, have also the right to pay no attention to anyone else's whatsoever. Especially ones which fail completely to formu- late a basis for any proper intel- lectual response. So I choose to dismiss it. Dissent, furthermore, must first be qualified, at the least, as a rudimentary comprehen- sion and grasp of whatever points of divergence are up for discussion. Clearly, in this case, that ba- sic criterion - was not estab- lished. Frank Trainor 462 Paxton Street DR. ELIZABETH RUSSELL xa DR.
