at dT PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 6, 1993 - 25 Legion Squirts win the A Championship in Stratford Beautiful weather, fine pitch- ing, clutch hitting, and some ex- cellent defence can make for a championship weekend in a fastball tournament, and that's what was presented in the city of Stratford this week as the Port Perry Legion Squirts emerged victorious over some very stiff competition. This team three weeks ago won the consolation championship in St. Catharines and learned a thing or two from their experience there that got them through this one. The coaching staff has been pleased with the perfor- mance of this team as of late and can see them gearing up for the season ending OASA cham- pionships which they are host- ing... This tournament consisted of 12 teams split into three divi- sions with round robin play slated for Saturday and the playoff rounds on Sunday. To get to the final the squad had to The trio of Cam Crawford, skip, Anne Glidden, vice, and Bill Owen Sr., lead, were the overall club winners for the first schedule at the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club. The club is open to visitors and newcomers interested in participating in the sport on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Coaching is available on Wednesday nights. ~ third all- play three games a day for a to- tal of six, all in that searing heat and humidity. With just 11 players in total, the squad was depleted to nine for the second half of the semi-final and the whole final as a couple of the guys succumbed to heat exhaus- tion. In round robin play, the team started off with Sarnia who probably gave them their hard- est battle of the day. Chris Jones started on the rubber, go- ing four innings on seven k's and one hit. Mark Richardson did a nice relief job going the fi- nal three with four hits. These two hooked up all weekend in tandem and over 37 innings allowed only 15 hits, while striking out 57. Sarnia made two throwing errors on - bunts by Ryan McQuade and Mike MacLennan which al- lowed both runners to advance to home and third respectively. On the defensive side, Sean Jef- frey gunned down a runner at _way from right field. The final in this one was 7- 2. Game Two Saturday gave the boys a little rest as they mercied Seaforth 12-1 in five innings. The hot bat here was Michael Versage as he went three. for four with two singles and a dou- ble. He was closely followed bv McQuade who went two for three and Aaron Lycett who had two hits in four plate appear- ances. Darryl Dalton in the catching position and McQuade hooked up on a play at the plate, stopping a potential run. The final game of the day saw the team hook up against an- other 'C' division centre as they faced St. Mary's. This team had a strapping pitcher who tow- ered over more than half of the Port squad, but our guys pre- vailed as he was forced to throw three inning's work in the first alone, as Lycett, Richardson and McQuade all fought off good pitches before we earned two runs on a walk to Mark and a home run by Ryan. Chris Mon- sma laid down a perfect bunt in the second to earn himself a hit and was later knocked in on Aa- ron's triple. Jeff Ashton was his regular steady self at catching as he had the opportunity to block the plate off and do his part. This one ended at 9-0 for the local boys behind the com- plete game effort by Jones and gave them their division title. In Sunday's playoff rounds, the Legionaires started off with Elmira and through the first couple of innings this looked like a real dogfight as Port held on to a 1-0 lead. This run was fashionedvon a double by Ashton who promptly stole third and scored on a bunt attempt by Monsma. The flood gates opened up in the third for Port as they sent 11 men to the plate that inning, scoring sev- Turnto Page 28 's and two USA-Canada fastball challenge to receive An international exhibition fastball match-up between the Oshawa Hornets and a visiting team from Sioux City, Iowa wi be given the royal welcome in Port Perry next week. : In Ontario for the Perth On- tario fastball tournament, the Soo's from Iowa will be making a stop in Port Perry on Wednes- day, July 14 to face the Oshawa Hornets who have qualified for the International Softball Con- gress World Fastball Champi- | onship in Kimberley Wisconsin in early August. Tickets are on sale at Pine- Ridge Sports on Queen St. or Subby's Submarine corner of 7A and Water St. g You had better come out early - for this doubleheader as this should be a'great night of fast- ball. Gamblers exit tournament in the third round The Greenbank Gamblers travelled to Ottawa on the weekend to compete in the 1.S.C. Tournament at Stittsville and while the team performed excellently they were out of the double knockout affair after three rounds. They got off to a great start as they dumped Barrie Canadian, Tire by a 4-1 score in a rain de- - layed game. The game started at 9 a.m. and finished at 1 p.m. Jim Chilvers tossed a nifty three hitter at the Barrie club and racked up a total of 15 strikeouts, as well as batting in a pair of Gambler runs. Paul Goreski had a pair of hits with Chilvers, Bill Buys and Brian Till adding singles. In a 3 p.m. game Greenbank met the Kemptville Thunder team and faced lefty Steve Price (possibly the top rated left handed pitcher in Ontario) and after four innings the Gamblers held a 1:0 lead on hits by Brian Till and Jim Chilvers. But in the sixth inning Kemptville finally got to Mark Goreski and went ahead 2-1 on a two out single just over the head of the shortstop. There was no further scoring in the game and Greenbank went down to the Thunder team by the 2-1 score. Saturday night saw the Gam- blers meet the Napanee Ex- proas and again Greenbank eld a 1-0 lead as Pete Qoste- rholt hit safely and scored on some daring base running and an errant throw by the Napan- ee center fielder. But the hard hitting Napanee club scored the tying run off Chilvers in the bottom' of the third and Carmen Pernarella led off the Napanee fourth in- + ning with a triple, Mark Gore- ski came on in relief of Chilvers at this point but with two out Napanee scored the go ahead run with a clean single to right field. Goreski kept Napanee off the scoreboa® the rest of the way but Bill Langridge on the Na- panee mound was equally tough and the Gamblers dropped their second straight - game by a 2-1 score and were 'out of the tournament. . Once again Greenbank proved that defensively they can play with any team in On- tario but they do not have the long ball hitters that some of the top senior clubs have. However, the purpose of en- tering the 1.S.C. Tournaments is to allow the Gamblers to com- pete against the top pitching and batting which helps a great deal when they get into the On- tario Intermediate "A" Play- downs. Back on the home front Greenbank still trail Oshawa O'Tooles by three points after dropping a tight 4-3 decision to the Oshawa Club last Monday night at Durham Fields. The Gamblers still have two games in hand on the O'Tooles team so this race should go right down to the wire. This week's action sees Greenbank at Durham Fields on Monday to face Oshawa Double "B" and the Gamblers host the Bowmanville Pagans at Greenbank this Thursday night for a four point encounter at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the Greenbank squad will be in Ni- agara Falls for the Annual Ni- agara Fastball Competition. The Gamblers first game at the Falls is 9 a.m. Saturday at Ker Park against Burlington. er im.
