The announcement was greeted with cheers from about 40 residents present last Wednesday morning in the Borelia Co-op community centre. Mr. Mills said the $384,000 jobsOntario Capital program is designed fo conserve energy, create jobs and test new technology. Under the program, 70 units operated by the Co-operative will receive funds for fuel sub- stitutions. "The switch from electric to gas heating is two or three times less expensive," Mr. Mills said. Another benefit of the jobs- Ontario project is it will credbe jobs for a wide variety of work- ers and industries including electricians, carpenters, design, assembly and supply houses. Mr: Mills says government is working,- closely with the private sector so the lessons learned from this demonstra- tion project can be used to encourage energy conservation and job creation in other homes. While the project benefits many people in many different ways, Mr. Mills stressed the Borelia Co-op project will have a big impact on their personal savings. By saving up to $600 a year in heating costs they will have more disposable income to spend, which ultimately creates more short and long- term jobs. The jobsOntario funding is part of the second phase of a $28 million demonstration pro- ject which involves a wide range of energy conservation measures for non-profit and public housing which includes installation of natural gas dry- ers, improved thermostats, more efficient showerheads and switching from electric heating to natural gas.
