My pra pier oR TW -- te PORT PERRY STAR - einai 1993 29, "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" © "The Port Perry Stars rep team is on a AG 'streak. Team members a are e (front, from left) EY Leanne Goslin, Julie Stephens, Marci :Zuly, Kiley Ballard, Michelle Moynham, Kara Newell, "Heather Anderson, (back row) Lindsay Kearns, Misty Garvock, Charlene Criscione, Jen Bacon, Melissa Dawson, Shona Moase, and Krista Lefort. Coaches are John Bacon and Jon Dawson, For the second time in as .many weeks the Port Perry Le- gion Squirts travelled to a tour- nament to return home as the 'A' champs. This time they did it . in the town of Simcoe on Satur- 'day as this was only a one day show instead of the two that were played in Stratford, much to the relief of everybody in- volved as again there was a lot of sunshine and humidity to battle. The tournament consist- ed of eight teams and went on a straight elimination format with both A and B divisions. In the first game they played, the team went up against Carli- sle and came away with an 8-1 victory. Chris Jones and Mark Richardson shared the pitching duties going three ihnings each and getting five strikeouts a piece while giving up just one hit. Jones also went two for three at the plate, as did Ryan McQuade with all four hits "be ing singles. Darryl Dalton laid -* down two nice bunts for a single and a sacrifice as well as lash- ing out an additional hit. Chris Monsma with a single, and Jeff Ashton with a triple rounded out the hitting in this orfe. Mike MacLennan played heads up defense in right field as he threw out a runner going to first on what looked like a sure fire "hit. Mike also had another as- gist as he tracked down a long hit which he relayed to Dalton at the cutoff who in turn whipped it to Ashton to cut down the runner at the plate. Game two was against Kitch- ener whom the team hadn't seen before and it wasn't known how they would do. Much to the delight of the crowd which has 80 faithfully followed this team so far the boys did not let them down as they recorded another 8-1 win. The two aces on the mound again performed well striking out seven and allowing Absent from the photo is Alisa Campbell. See story for details. Legion Squirts Simcoe A champs two hits this time. Mike Versage soo up a bunt attempt and threw to hy 2 ron Lycett covering at first for one of the fine defensive plays. Outfielders McTaggart, Mon- sma, and Jeffrey did their 'usual steady jobs of covering for er- rant throws which does tend to stick in the minds of the appos- ing players as they think tential steals. Aaron was di kept busy at second as he had a 'number hit to him which he re- layed to Mark Hefférn at first. ~ Aslead off hitter, Aaron went two for three with a pair of sin- gles and scored the game's first run. McQuade continued his hot pace as he went a perfect three for:three with two singles " and a double. Mark Heffern found some pitching to his satis- faction as he was two for two and drew a walk. Additional hits went to Ma- _cLennan, and Jones with keen -" eyes for walks going to Richard- son, Jeffrey and McTaggart with the latter two coming around to score. Again these players are showing that they can play heads up ball as McTaggart, Monsma, Ashton and Dalton continued to tear up. the base paths on steals and passed balls. The final of the day pitted the Legion team against the host Simcoe tearn who had previous- ly beat Port in the St. Catha- rines Tournament 5-2 and put them in the consolation side. Port knew they had to dig in if they wanted to even the score and played excellent as they put a 5-0 shutout in the books. Jones went the distance notching 11 strikeouts while al- lowing two singles and award- ing no walks. He also went two for three at the plate helping the team out on both sides of the coin. Port themselves only got sev- en . hits and were afforded 'a couple of errors by the home team which allowed the speed- sters to do their:jobs. McQuade finished thé tournament with * another hitin this one. Also adding to their stats were Versage with a base hit, Ashton with two singles, and McTaggart with a shot. No : sma, Ashton and McTaggart -. . reached on the dreaded bon 'with Jeff and Reid making the best of them by coming in to score. Mark Heffern made a great ' catch out-in right as he pulled . one off the top of his shoe laces: on the very first play of the 'game. Mark Richardson held a. very steady glove gt firalyas he he. was on the receiving 'en three fireballs from Mca, He also handled a grounder down the line and made the put- out on his own. Dalton made a fine catch of a line drive going to his right while playing second and also had two assists to first. Versage was steady at third as - | he gunned down a bunt attempt to do his part on preserving the shutout. The most amazing play of this affair occurred out in left field as Monsma was' 'running in for the catch only to fall in' the grass. While laying flat on his stomach he stretched out his en- tire 3' - 6" frame and'came up with the catch much to the astonishment of the batter. With plays like that and others mentioned prior in this article the outfield of MacLennan, who could not play this one due to the heat, Monsma, Jeffrey, Ly- cett, McTaggart and the others continue to hone their skills and build 'up the confidence of-the pitching staff as they can throw strikes knowing that there is a fine defensive squad behind them. As well as the team hardware that was brought home, two in- dividuals received awards for their play throughout the day. Chris Jones got top pitcher as he worked 14 innings giving up one run and three hits and striking out 21. Ryan McQuade received tournament MVP as he hit .667 and made some fine defensive plays at the shortstop position. If Ryan had got him- self one more hit in that last game he would have also re- ceived the top hitter award. The team's next tournament will 'be on July 24 when they travel to Cobourg. The team's record to date.in tournament and league play consists of 21 wins, five losses, and have outscored the opposi- tion 214-68. ; na, and will kick o Stars victorious By John Bacon ~The Port Perry Star's. girls PRs rep team have managed to old onto their undefeated streak. ...
