Absent from photo is Bill Jeffrey. 25 YEARS AGO THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1968 The Port Perry Lakers lacrosse team con- tinues to gain ground against its opposition. The team recently defeated Cresswell 12-6. Goal scorers were W. Karas, B. Reeson, B. Taylor and A. Ashton with two each. Singles went to G. Slute, W. Ashton, B. Appleton and E. Judd. E The convenors for the 1968 softball league are Al Wackett, Don Cochrane, Joe Fowler, Vin Walker and Wayne Venning. 20 YEARS AGO WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 1973 A funeral service was held this week for former NHL star John Ross Roach. Roach, 73, a native of Port Perry had a 14-year career in the National Hockey League. He played goal for the Toronto St. Pats when they won the Stanley Cup in 1922. He played with the St. Pats-Maple Leafs until 1926. He then played with the New York Rangers from 1928-1932 and two years in Detroit before re- tiring. The Legion Squirts defeated Oak Ridges 5- 4. George Burnett was the winning pitcher. Bob Ireland and Mark Jeffrey led the Port Perry batters in their victory. The Ladies of Lindsay Lawn Bowling Club held a double tournament. The Port Perry team of Elma Cox as skip scored a 44 plus two. 15 YEARS AGO WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 1978 A brawl between Scarborough and Willow- dale in the final match of the Midget baseball tournament caused the tournament to end without a victor. The teams fought for several minutes, cauing the umpires and officials-to call the game. Ten year old Lori King was the winner in the "Name the Team" contest. Lori's name "MoJacks" will apply to the Junior C hockey club next season. The team will also change from its red and white sweaters to yellow, white and green. In ladies softball action Port Perry defeated Lake Wilcox 7-6. Chris Donelly had a home run and a triple, Carol Bond a triple and a double, Janie Thornton a triple, Carol Wilton a double and Val Sweetman a double. 10 YEARS AGO - TUESDAY, JULY 12, 1983 Carol Wilson won the Ontario Al Balding for Timmy Torunament of Champions, which was held at Rolling Hills in Toronto. A bike rodeo was held at the library in con- junction with Durham Regional Police. Sixteen of the finest Midget-aged fastball teams in Ontario are in Port Perry this week- end for the 8th annual tournament, hosted by the Port Perry Minor Softball Association. Bill Marconi, of Blackstock, was the lucky winner of the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club's 50/50 draw. Under 17 girls soccer team record two impressive wins Dana Forder Under 17 Girls Soccer team played two games the week of July b. Game One - Tuesday, July 6 against Ajax Parker Interiors in Ajax. Port opened the scoring when Shaun Gault took an indirect free kick which was headed by Shawna Cornish to Kelly Phipps, who finished the play with another header into the goal. The first halfended 1-0. Early in the second half, Ajax scored to make the score 1-1. Af- ter this goal, the Port girls seemed to let Ajax take control of the game. Some fine defen- sive plays kept the score tied. Then, with less than 10 min- utes left, the Forder girls turned it- on. First, Emily Co- sway connecting for a goal, fol- lowed shortly by Shawna Cor- nish"s goal to wrap up the scoring. Final score 3-1 for Port. Special thanks to Under 15 trial players Leanne Wakeford in goal and Heather Treadway on the forward line. Game Two - Thursday, July 8 at the Soccer Fields. Pickering Village supplied the opposition on this night and the Forder girls ran away with this game by a score of 5-0. Goals by Shaun Gault 2, Pau- la Reed, Shawna Cornish and Kelly Phipps in a well-played game, when all players showed no mercy on Pickering. Under 15 girls again helped secure the victory with Janine Hammond earning the shutout and for- wards Cate Lewis, Katie Senyk and Chris Chambers. The team members truly appreciate the help of the Under 15 girls dur- ing this hot and humid spell of weather. Next game in Pickering, Thursday, July 15 at 9 p.m. un- der the lights. Bronze-medal win advances Angels to provincial meet July 30-August 2 This past week, the Angels had a busy week of play, start- ing off by handing Bowmanville an 8-0 loss. Janie Thornton threw a three-hitter, as well, picked up a hit too. Tracy Smith had three R.B.I.'s, along with three hits. Laurie Dudgeon had a single and triple, Michelle Dukkin and Amber Wood each had two hits. This past weekend, the An- gels won a Bronze Medal, and a trip to London for the Provincial Championships, on the August 1 holiday weekend. And to get there, they did it in great fash- ion, by carving out three wins early in the tournament to put them in the Provincial Champi- onships. Getting there, they defeated Oshawa S & H Fabs 6-3 with two big innings in the second 'and third, when they put to- gether two three-run innings, enough to win the game. Joanne Graham with a triple and single, and Gena Spence with a triple and single, along with Amber Wood with two sin- gles. Joanne Graham was the winning pitcher. In game two, the Angels de- feated Kingston Wildcats 4-1 as Joanne Graham won her second game, giving the Angels two wins. Graham threw a four hit- ter, as Joyce Parkinson and Laurie Dudgeon each batted in two runs, enough to give the girls the win 4-1. The Scugog "Angels" and Owen Sound Riddells were ex- tended to an eight inning ball game, before the Angels opened up a four-run inning, taking the lead in the game. Janie Thorn- ton, Gena Spence and Laurie Dudgeon drove home the runs. The Angels then held off Owen Sound to one lone run. Laurie Dudgeon and Gena Spence each had two hits. Final score Scugog 4 Owen Sound 1. In the fourth game of the tournament, the Angels ran into a pretty strong outfit from North Bay. Tracy Smith and Kim Stewart and Janie Thorn- ton had the only hits. Three runs in the third, one in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and one more4n the sixth, nothing was going to stop North Bay as they went on to win 8-0. On Sunday morning, the An- gels and Kingston Wildcats knew they were in a ball game, as they played a tight ball game. Three times the Angels had runners in scoring position, but couldn't put them across. Joyce Parkinson with three hits, a triple and two singles, was the leading hitter. Janie Thornton tossed a seven hitter and was tough when she had to In the top of the eighth, King- ston put together two back-to- back hits (single and a double) to score their lone run, giving them a 1-0 lead, and knocking out the Angels from the Tour- nament. The ladies turned in a top performance this past weekend, and did what they set out to do, get in the Provincial Championships, starting on Friday, July 30, 1993 and run- ning through to Aug. 2, 1993. This Tuesday night, the An- gels are in Oshawa at Durham College to play Whitby, game time is 8:30 p.m. Mites 9-10-11 Saintfield Machining met the Ziz-Zags on July 7 in a super matchup endingin a 4-4 tie. The Ziz-Zags played an excel- lent game with great pitching by Danielle Henry and Justin Vandergast and good plays by Luke Pilkey.
