Midget Merchants This week's sports report is sponsored by R.B. Moase, C.A., Ives Antiques, and Galley Fish and Seafood. After the disappointment of the Elimination Games, the Port Perry Midget Merchants returned to league play with two excellent games this week. On Tuesday, the Merchants played O'Tooles, the top team in the Oshawa Men's League. This game was an exciting pitching duel between Smith of the Mer- chants and Crummy of O'Tooles, with superb defence from both sides. Especially not- ed was a diving catch at second by Vander Slagt. With Port be- hind 2-1 going into the seventh, Smith aided his own cause by hitting a triple and allowing Laird to cross the plate and tie the score. Unfortunately, in the eighth, O'Tooles were able to bringin a run and won the game 3-2in overtime. On Thursday night, the Mid- get Merchants visited the mos- quito infested Bowmanville dia- mond where the fans were treated to an amazing display of aerobics from the outfielders as they decided whether to field the ball or swat the mosquitoes. At the end of seven innings, the game was tied forcing overtime once again. McBride started with a double and was driven home on a single by Cochrane allowing Port to take a 3-2 lead. The Merchants were able to hold off Bowmanville and win the game. The play of the game was a McBride throw from cen- tre field to Kay, the catcher, who blocked the plate perfectly and tagged out the go-ahead run at home. Card had a strong pitching game, striking out 11, walking only two, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Hitters for the week: Card - three singles, triple, RBI; Co- chrane - RBI; Empringham - single, RBI; Laird - two singles, triple, RBI; Linton - single; McBride - three singles, double; Smart - two walks; Smith - two singles, triple, RBI; Vander Slagt - single. Coming games: Tuesday, July 13 - Stouffville vs Mer- chants at 8:30 p.m.; Thursday, July 15 - Merchants vs Oshawa BB at 8:45 p.m.; Saturday, July 17 - Guelph Midget Tourna- ment with the game times yet to be decided.
