boos "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Native artist Maxine Noel displays work in Port Perry this weekend The work of well-known na- tive artist Maxine Noel will be featured in Port Perry this weekend. Ms. Noel, who is known by her Sioux name of "loyan Mani," (Walk Beyond), uses a wide range of media including draw- ing, painting, etching, serigra- phy and cast paper. Her sub- Jects are young mothers, dancers, lovers and the crea- tures of the plains. Two local artists on "Eye on Toronto" July 20th Scugog residents Sue Barton and Kay Goldberg will be fea- tured on the CFTO Television program "Eye On Toronto." The women are the creative geniuses behind Bartonberg " Originals, makers of one-of-a- kind art dolls, oil cloth dolls, Fa- ther Christmases and scrim- shaw necklaces. Their work was brought to the attention of "Eye On Toron- to" producers by a CFTO Televi- sion employee who read arecent feature story on Mrs. Barton and Mrs. Goldberg in the Port Perry Star. A television crew was at Mrs. Goldberg's Port Perry home on - Tuesday, July 6 to film the seg- ment. Although it took three hours to shoot, Mrs. Barton said the film will be edited down to two minutes. The segment will be shown on Tuesday, July 20. "Eye On To- ronto" airs at 11 a.m. on Chan- nel 9, Cable 8. Ms. Noel's work portrays the essential characteristics of the Indian people -- their sensibili- ties, generosity and loving na- ture -- with a fresh and distinc- tive modern presentation. According to Ms. Noel, her ARTIST MAXINE NOEL two favorite subjects are the ea- gle and the hawk due to their strength and freedom. She interprets her belief in common denominator to all h itages and cultures of the world with a mystical, spiritual quali- ty. The flowing lines indicate strength and serenity and the simplicity of composition and abstraction makes her unique. Ms. Noel has received inter- national acclaim for her works in countries including Canada, Russia, Great Britain and Ja- pan. She has been involved in nu- merous projects recently includ- ing a comtemporary ballet "In the Land of the Spirits" for which she designed the cos- tumes and a book entitled "Tales of Anishinaubaek" by Ba- sil H. Johnston which she illus- trated. She will be featured at Native Perspectives in Port Perry on July 17 and 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sherry Spofford featured in edition of Starweek A Port Perry girl was featured in a recent edition of Starweek magazine. A short story and picture of Sherry Spofford, 11, appeared in Lilana's Diary, a regular soap opera column in the Toronto Star's television listing publica- tion. Sherry, a big fan of the soap opera The Young and The Rest- less, is pictured with actor Peter Bergman who portrays Jack Ab- bott on the show. "I have always claimed to have the best readers any col- umnist could ask for," writes Li- lana Novakovich, a Canadian agent and promoter for many television soap stars. "One particular reader, who attends all of my soap opera star appearances, has also won the hearts of the whole Young and The Restless cast," she contin- ues. "Sherry Spofford and her mom Yvonne come all the way from Port Perry to see their fa- vorite performers." "Recently they travelled here to see Peter Bergman (Jack Ab- bott) at the Markham Supercen- tre Mall. Peter always makes time for Sherry after the show, whichsheand I sincerely appre- ciate." Last summer, the Port Perry Star reported on the Spoffords' trip to the show's annual fan club gathering.
