Regional Chairman Gary Herrema said last week that groups seeking to stall or block development often use various environmental acts as their de- fence. "Rather than using it, they are abusing it," he said. "They are milking it for allit's worth." And in the process these groups are hurting the region and its progress. Chairman Herrema noted that in the past year alone, ap- proximately 100 jobs and more than $200,000 in annual tax revenue have been lost to other communities. "We do have to protect the en- vironment, but there's enough agencies in place that the envi- ronment will be protected." Chairman Herrema is partic- ularily alarmed that a new piece of legislation protecting the en- vironment was set to be passed. Chairman Herrema main- tains the Environmental Bill of Rights will enable groups to hold up projects for two to three years while it is being heard by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). The OMB is the agency which hears the appeals. The regional chairman says one solution to the problem is to appoint more officials to the OMB to hear the cases within 30 days. This, he says, will speed up the process, and allow pro- jects to progress.
