22 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 20, 1993 v b ¥ "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice' " Expected to be complete by Sept. 30 The church will also receive a Museum restoration project on schedule By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star The Head Church restoration project is progressing on sched- ule, says Paul Arculus, presi- dent of the Lake Scugog Histori- cal Society. Work on the $68,000 job be- gan the second week of June and 1s expected to be completed by September 30. "The weather certainly has co-operated with us," Mr. Arcu- lus says. "I see no reason why the project won't be completed bythe end of September." The windows have been re- moved from the church and are being redone, he says. The building has been elevat- ed three feet allowing the work- ers todig holes for the footings. Mr. Arculus says the church has nine pressure points, but 13 pillars will be implemented to give the building extra support. The footings for the pillars were poured on Friday. New wooden support beams will replace the rotted beams along the bottom ofthe church. When the building is lowered, 1t will sit about one foot higher than the original height. Mr. Ar- culus says this will reduce the chance of wood rot caused by runoff from the Island Road. paintjob. Mr. Arculus says it is a bless- ing that the restoration project went ahead this year. "Ifit had been left any longer, it would have been a question of whether the building could have been saved," he says. "I don't suspect this building would have stayed together much longer taking into consid- eration to condition of these beams." Many of the museum's other historical buildings are also re- ceiving upgrades as part of the restoration project. Some of the projects are new eaves, paint and shingles on many of the buildings, and new doors for the barn. Improvements to the print shop, which received a large platform deck and new win- dows, was funded by Island resi- dent Joel Aldred. Mr. Arculus has nothing but praise for the six men who are working on the restoration pro- Ject. "These guys are excellent workers," he says. "You couldn't ask for a better work crew. They have entered into the spirit of Canadian heritage and have a THE "LESS NN @ Antiques ® Country Collectables aa © Folk Art & Supplies @ Candles ® Floral Arrangements 143 Perry St. Port Perry w Crafts & Supplies 985-4823 Phone & F ® Lace @ Ribbon « Baskets one Sra © Fax Service now available OPEN 10-5pm lot of pride in their work." ® Ceramics ® Cherubs x (just around the corner) R RY 7 DAYS a WEEK x= "An Affordable Alternative" 4 J ht IH HH J ORT PERRY auto glass &* trim nd. 6 igh shoot Por pory 985-8507 a [ y ) MET CI EOF 1( WRITTEN GUARANTEE | J wisps > UPHOLSTERY Boat Tops, Seats & Complete UY holstery, Sunroofs, ° INSURANCE WORK ° SAVE upto On any one replacement WINDSHIELD *50°° Insurance Claim with most insurance companies with this coupon at time of purchase ITBY AUTO GLASS specialists lid. --- A -- Whitby 668-2003 J...
