34 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 20, 1993 Tyke tournament . « From Page 31 in the fourth drove in two for the six-run margin and win. The third game against Bea- verton was the toughest of the day. Ryan Fraser in relief for Jeff Slute in the second struck out five in three innings to shut down Beaverton from carrying on with their five-run first in- ning. Rob Privett's line drive catch at second and alert throw back to first was key to closing out the second inning. With Beaverton leading 6-4 after three innings, Whitworth's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth was enough for the 9-6 win. Tim Wray's triple in the first was good for driving in two. A strong arm by catcher Wray was also the key to several pick - offs at second and third. Effec- tive stealing and the speed of all the team kept the pace go- ing. This tense, come-from- behind game lifted the team to the championship final against Cannington. The final game was no con- test for the spirited team. Weak pitching from Cannington, along with the strong effective pitching duo of Slute and Fras- er shut down the Cannington offence. Slute struck out three in three shut-out innings while Fraser struck out two in the fifth and Jason Whitworth one in the fourth to hold Canning- ton to only two runs. The convincing 15-2 win saw Seagrave score five runs in each of the first, third and fourth innings. Whitworth, Wray, Fraser, Slute and Ryan Szewarda all went two for three Jason at the plate with a single by Russ Madill in the fourth to add two more runs. Again, heads-up speedy base running and stealing shut down Cannington. Strong accu- rate arms from catcher Tim Wray and the pitchers led to six pick-offs in this game. The tournament win was a complete team effort and all the boys must be congratulated on their excellent season. The team will now play some exhibi- tion games in preparation for the final league playoff against the North Division champs which will be decided in Fene- lon Falls next weekend. In the Consolation final, Oak wood defeated Cannington II in an exciting game. The tournament was a great success and a special thank you goes out to all the parents who assisted in the planning and preparation. The team would also like to thank the profes- sional and sound umpiring team consisting of Wayne McCully, Brandon Puckrin, Rob Smith, Adam McTaggart, Keith Weishuhn and fathers Ken Fraser, Grant Madill, Ed - Johansen, Bill Whitworth and Terry Hughson. Thanks also the Seagrave Park Board for their support. Congratulations to the "Gold- en Glove" competition winner, Jessie McLeish from Canning- ton and our own Jason Whit- worth winning the "Running Base" competition with a time of 14.94 seconds. Thanks to Pineridge Sports for the gift certificate donation. Oakwood wins consolation Our first game was a little shaky, seeing us lose 10-8 against Woodville I. Our second game against Oakwood I gave us a 6-0 victory. Excellent pitching by Trevor Barr, Steven Saunders and our terminator, Christopher De- schenes. This win advanced our team to the consolation round. Our bats in game two were also hot. The third game - for the con- solation champion - was against Cannington I. Our team was pumped up and ready for the challenge, as the whole team watched them in their previous game, looking for play strategy. We started off with a hot bat from Shawn Morey. Trevor Barr's bunting was perfection, PP Auto advancing players on the field. Once again excellent pitching was seen by Trevor Barr, Greg Drinkwalter and our very own terminator, Christopher De- schenes. Our most improved player for the season was Derek Virgo. We, the coaches, Earle and Cecylia Barr and Brian Drink- walter were very proud to coach this team to a victory of 16-10 for the consolation. Thanks, team, for the great season. A special thanks goes out to all the parents who helped throughout the season, whenev- er they were asked - Bob Wal- lace, Bill Smithers and Rick Mo- Glass meets Perfect Heating By Judy MacSween On Tuesday, July 13 Port Perry Auto Glass hosted a game against Perfect Heating in Greenbank. With the help of Travis How- ell, Mike Phoenix, Joel Thomp- son and Matt Sturgess of the Perfect Heating team who caught for both teams, we were able to have a fun-filled game. The game was close with only a four run difference until the sixth inning when Perfect Heat- ing stayed ahead and won the game. Both teams played excel- lent ball. Perfect Heating had Travis Howell hit a home run in the fifth and a grand slam in the sixth, Mike Phoenix went three on field for three with a grand slam in the sixth. Paul Chang went three for fourincluding a double and a triple. Great defensive plays were made by Travis Mac- Sween on third, Chad Yakeley on short and Travis Howell on first. Port Perry Auto Glass had Steven Doan, Jamie Chrichton and Chris Ellischuk not only play a good game, they all hit two for three. Blayne Kinnunen played a great defensive ball game especially covering first. Good plays were also made by Doug Tobin and Justin Killing- beck. The Auto team would like to thank eight-year-old David for his fine contribution on short. Greenbank takes over top spot Gamblers bats get wake up call Last week saw the Green- bank Gambler bats finally come to life as they played their two chief competitors in the Oshawa City League and they won both games convincingly and moved into top spot. Mark Goreski and Jim Chil- vers have provided Greenbank with excellent pitching this year and Greenbank have turned this pitching and good defence into numerous low scor- ing victories. But the past week saw the Gamblers go into Oshawa on Monday night and hand the first place Oshawa O'Toole's an 8-1 thumping at Durham Fields. The good pitching was still there as Mark Goreski - spun a nifty two-hitter at the O'Toole's batsmen but the Greenbank attack caught fire and they collected 14 hits off of Oshawa's Steve Crummy. Brian Till led the parade with three safeties including a dou- ble and triple with Trevor Till, Don Beaton, Bill Bius and Mark Goreski each having a pair of hits. Steve Durham, Dave Ba- con and Mike Giroux also hit safely for Greenbank. Mark Go- reski had a home run for the Gamblers and accounted for three runs batted in. The win moved Greenbank one point ahead of O'Toole's in league standing and three in front of the Oshawa Weasels in the tight league race. Thursday night saw the Oshawa Waltzing Weasels come into Greenbank Park and the Gamblers picked up right where they left off on Monday as they pounded out 12 hits en route to a 9-2 win over the Oshawa club. Jim Chilvers and Mark Gore- ski teamed up on the Green- bank mound and allowed four hits and two runs. Terry Till led the Gamblers with three hits, with Mike Giroux, Jim Chilvers aiid Brian Till having two hits apiece, with Steve Durham, Trevor Till and Bill Buys each collecting a hit. Among the Gambler's dozen hits were home runs by Bill Buys, Jim Chilvers and Trevor Till. Greenbank catcher Paul Go- reski has had a heavy workload this season and is having excel- lent success at throwing out base stealers. Stolen bases. against Paul this year are few. and far between anf the ball is' usually waiting for the runner as he slides into second. The Gamblers play the Port Perry Merchants this Tuesday night in Port Perry and host Port Perry Atriums in Green- bank Park on Thursday night. July 30,31, Aug. 1 and 2 will see Greenbank back in Ottawa at the Ontario Senior- Intermediate Elimination Championship Tournament. Taylor Ford Mites B finalists in Napanee On July 12 at home, our Mites played against Pickering. In this one, Tim Jones pitched a "no-hitter" throughout until he was forced out by an injury with two outs left in the game. Mike LeFort came on to record the last two outs by strikeouts for the save and to preserve the no- hitter. Tim struck out 11 bat- ters and gave up just three walks. The offense against Pickering was led by hot-hitting Mike Koury who went two for two. Matt Clayton had a nice bunt single and Jeff Kane's rocket feet helped him beat out an in- field hit. Other hits were by Tim and Mike Lefort. Steve Ma- cLennan had two walks. ; On July 17, the team went to Napanee for their second sea- son tournament. Game one was a 12-3 win over Oshawa. Tim and Mike (Bullet) LeFort com- bined for a two hitter and 13 strikeouts. Hits were by Wise- man, Skerratt, LeFort, Tim, Mike (Devil) Koury and Jeff Kane. A defensive highlight was a great throw to first by shortstop Stuart Cochrane. With no break Game two was against the host Napanee team whose pitcher allowed hits to only LeFort and Koury. Tim ab- sorbed the loss despite walking Just one of the 21 batters he faced. Mike Milligan and Matt Clayton (Scooter) patrolled the outfield diligently for Port to back up throws around the bas- es. Port Perry advanced to the 'B' final by a sensational come- from-behind win over Belle- ville. Matt Breen scored after his walk to trigger the come- back in the fourth inning with Belleville leading 3-0. A four run sixth inning sealed a 7-4 "Taylor-Ford" win. "Bullet" Le- Fort was great on the rubber in this one with 12 Ks while allow- ing just one hit. He helped him- self out on a two run triple as well. Other Port hits were by Skerratt, Steve Maclennan and Tim Jones (one hit and two walks). Mike (Windows) Wise- man and "Milli" Milligan also had sharp eyes for two walks. Tim helped out behind the mask when the heat struck down our "pocket-rocket." Once again our squad was faced with a back-to-back game against Picton. Our fourth game of the day saw our tired young men stumble early in the "B" final as a noisy and un- sportsmanlike group of Picton supporters heckled our team. Despite this and having to con- tend with a different type of pitching delivery our team nev- er threw in the towel even when down to Picton 7-0. Our rep stars silenced the opposition bleacher by a late five run come.- back including a surprise steal of home by Matt Skerratt! Time ran out on the magic, however, and we had to settle for a logs by a 7-6 score. Our defensive highlights were a great centre field sliding Turnto Page 36
