I am referring to the Festival Days "Best West Baby" contest that raised $2,500 for Big Brothers/Big Sis- ters. Posters around town adver- tised this as a contest with dif- ferent categories depending on the age of the child (i.e. 1st cate- gory: up to two years of age) with a special category for twins. I felt good entering my one-year-old daughter in this contest because it would raise money for a local charity, I felt even better when I found out it was a children's charity in des- perate need of the funds - but who am I kidding? I, like most other parents, entered my child in order to see her name in print and with the hope that she would win. My husband and I were very pleased when we were telephoned on the Satur- day night and told that the $300.28 we had raised for our daughter had caused her to be the second highest fundraiser, second only to Kailly Anderson, a very deserving winner who raised $565. So, why am I now angry and feeling cheated? Sometime, between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, the contest changed and be- came a competition bétween male fundraisers and female fundraisers; the advertised cat- egories altered in favor of the more sexist ones. Pictures of the "winning girl" and "winning boy" were placed in the Port Perry Star on July 13 with no mention whatsoever of any oth- er child entered or the amounts FOR SALE DAPHNE'S Ladies Fashion Store Downtown Port Perry's PRIME RETAIL LOCATION Purchase includes inventory, leaseholds, established lines. Premises are air conditioned, carpeted and have excellent leaseholds. Long term lease available. A good opportunity for an entrepreneurial owner/operator. CALL 436-3025 raised by each. What happened to the "categories" advertised around town? There are more than 12 other sets of parents out 'there who I am sure would have liked some recognition for their children's contributions. An ar- ticle had been placed in the Port Perry Star on July 6 detailing how badly the money was need- ed - so why not an article detail- ing everyone's hard work? I'm sure all of us parents would have liked this, even if it was just to be cut out for the scrap book. Next year, please advertise your "Best West Baby Contest" correctly as "Best West Boy/ Best West Girl." Better yet, stick with what you advertised ~ this year and keep sex out of it. It has nothing to do with fund- raising. : : Sherri Foote, Port Perry PUBLISHER'S NOTE: The Port Perry Star contacted Big Brothers/ Sisters Association executive director Patti Goreski Monday and she explained they decided to create two categories in the contest at the last moment because of the number of prizes they had to give away. Mrs. Goreski also said that all the participants will be receiving a letter of thanks from the organi- zation in the near future. Results of the Best West Baby Contest are as follows: Girls -. Ist, Kailly Anderson; 2nd, Aurora - Foote; 3rd, Ashley Porter /Short. Boys - 1st Daniel Cook; 2nd, Cody Carr; 3rd, Dustin Ballingal. Twins - Kyle and Caitlin Trail.
