(Ted) oo RR September12,1930 -June 27, 1993 An anesthesiologist at the Oshawa General Hospital for the past thirty-six years, Dr. E. M. Culp passed away on Sun- day, June 27, 1993, while vaca- tioning in Dawson City, Yukon. Ted was born Edward Moyer Culp on September 12, 1930 in Vineland Station, Ontario to the late Ernest and Grace Culp. He was raised on a large family farm on the shores of Lake On- tario, surrounded with a rich family heritage which descend- ed from the United Empire Loy- alists who emigrated to the Vineland area (originally known as "The Twenty", twenty miles from the Niagara River) during the American/English wars. Following graduation from Beamsville High School, as a hard-working and gifted student with an innate talent for mathematics and a pen- chant for details, Ted pursued his education at the University of Toronto, graduating from Medical School in 1954. Hz then established a private practice with a medical school colleague in Brampton, Ontario. In 1956, he married his first wife, Mau- reen, with whom he had three children: Laurie, Michael and Christopher. In July, 1957, Ted relocated to Oshawa and joined the staff of the Oshawa General Hospi- tal, Department of General Practice with Anaesthesia Priv- ileges. He continued his dedica- tion and commitment to the medical profession at the Oshawa General Hospital for the next thirty-six years, serv- ing as both a member and as chairman of several medical committees - three times as Chief of the Department of An- aesthesia, as Chief of the Medi- cal Staff and as a member of the Medical Executive. Ted's character and passion- ate qualities also played a large role in his personal life. On May 12. 1989, Ted married Jeanne (Williams-Jackman) and start- ed a new life in Port Perry. Commitment, dedioatjon, re- sponsibility, service and music important words for Ted. At Beamsvile High School, he played the violin in the school orchestra, at university he was president of Hart House and sang in the Hart House Glee Club and played for six years in the Daffodils Medical Review; Ted played bass violin in a swing band; sand bass in a Bar- bershop Quartet and sang in a variety of groups - the Oshawa Choral Society, County Town Singers, Sounds Great, Scugog~ Choral Society and the Port Perry United Church Choir, to mention a few. He was a strong supporter of the Oshawa Green Gaels Lacrosse Team, acting as their doctor. On July 1, 1990, Ted became a life member in the Canadian Medical Protec- tive Association; he was a mem- ber of the Port Perry United Church, serving as an elder and choir member; and was a board member of Town Hall 1873. Travel was another of Ted's goals and he explored each of the continents during his life- time. There were few places not yet "pinned down" on his globe. Family was also very impor- tant to Ted - he opened his heart and his home to all family members and gave each person the benefit of the doubt through life's challenging times and his heartful generosity whenever and wherever needed. Ted's approach towards life was "I'm not afraid of dying, just afraid of not having lived." Ted "died living." Ted was a wonderful, loving, sometimes "quirky", always caring hus- band, father, grandfather, friend and colleague. He will be missed tremendously by his family and friends but all are richer for having known him and having shared some part of his sixty-two plus years. Remembering him with love are his wife Jeanne, daughter Laurie and her husband Jim Stevenson (Leamington); sons Michael (Toronto) and Chnisto- pher (Oshawa), grandchildren Danielle and Matthew; step- children Jerry (Toronto), Janice (Brampton), Jim (Peterbo- rough) and Joe Jackman (Port Perry); brother Howard and wife Marguerite (Windsor, N.S.), mother-in-law Doris Wil- liams; brothers-in-law John Williams and wife Nancy (Port Perry), Grant Williams and wife Debbie (Markham) and niece Janna Williams and nephew Tyler Williams. Wagg Funeral Home ar- ranged Ted's funeral service conducted by Rev. Bob LePage on Friday, July 2, 1993 at the Port Perry United Church, fol- lowed by cremation at Mount Lawn Crematorium. Palltear- ers were Michael and Christo- pher Culp, Howard Culp, Jim Stevenson, Jim and Joe Jack- man.
