EONS ES LURES 28 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August. 4 1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" - Cawkers hold Nestleton, Caesarealfh, by Thought: The essentials for great living, a faith to live by...faith in yourself and others. Cawker Reunion Over 60 members of the Caw- ker clan met on Sunday, July 25 at Birdseye Centre Park for a "gala" get-together. Relatives were present from many points across Ontario for the festive oc- casion. Along about supper time, a fantastic array of home baking, salads, meats, etc. adorned the long tables, and everyone enjoyed the bountiful meal! All in all, a great day. Trust 1994 will be even better. 80th Birthday Celebration A lovely party was hosted by the family of Margaret Cornish, who celebrated her 80th birth- day on Saturday, July 24 in Latcham Centre, Port Perry. A festive occasion with many relatives and friends present to extend very best wishes to Mar- garet - a new plateau in her in- teresting life. May she enjoy ru many more! A surprise 40th wedding an- niversary party was held at the Nestleton Community Centre on Saturday, July 31, in honor of Jean and Arnold Williams. They were taken out to din- ner by their brothers and sis- ters, while their children pre- pared the hall for their arrival. Upon entering the hall they were instructed to open a big surprise box. Their daughter Janice from Edmonton, Alberta was the contents of that box. Ron Williams, brother of Ar- nold, did a fine job as Master of Ceremonies. A short program consisted of a skit entitled "A Normal Day in the Life of Jean and Arnold," where the cast were kept very busy answering the phone and doing things for family and friends who dropped by. This skit was written and produced by Jean's sister, Doro- . thy Smith and put into action by Neil and Anne-Marie Williams and many other family mem- bers. Family congratulations were offered by Janice, Steve, Dale and Neil Williams as they presented their parents with a beautiful family picture. Howard Hall, Mayor of Scu- gog, presented a plaque from Scugog Township. A certificate of recognition was also received from Gov. of Ont. Rev. Dale Da- vis offered congratulations on behalf of the Nestleton Commu- nity. Herb Vine rendered two beautiful selections: "Look at Me," and "That's All I Ask Of You," from "Phantom of the Op- era," which was accompanied by Cheryl Marek, of Oshawa. Jean and Arnold responded fit- tingly by thanking all for such a great evening. The rest of the evening was enjoyed by visiting and dancing to the music of Bev and John Westlake of Peterborough. The Regatta weekend was a great success and to finish its last chapter the teams still out- standing in the volleyball, play off in the drizzling rain Sunday night. I will not cover all the winners whom should be men- tioned but just cover the major cups. Albert Putsey Sr. trophy for highest points in field day events - Jami Morgan. Sandy Hollingworth trophy for men - open 100 yard dash - Craig Mor- gan. Harry Sears trophy high- est points in Aquastic Events Leigh Wagland. Ladies Aggre- gate keeper trophy for Field and I Aquatic events - Jami Morgan. Men's Aggregate keeper trophy for Field and Aquatic events - Drew Wagland. L.S.R.A. golf I covered last week. I wish to thank the committee as a whole and others for the great job they did. Also those 156 individuals who went out and canvassed on the L.S.R.A. be- half. Thanks to Rev. John Bens- chop for his Sunday morning service in the park. Several from Nestleton area enjoyed events on Saturday at the Lake Scugog Annual Regat- ta. Joan Pearce did a fine job as M.C. The Gala Fun Parade, Good Tyme Cloggers of Black- stock and: Classic Car Club of Port Perry had a very apprecia- tive audience. President and Mrs. Albert Putsey hosted a de- licious luncheon, assisted by committee members for Mayor and Mrs. Hall, Classic Car Club members and judges. Their spa- cious grounds with umbrella ta- bles, proved to be an ideal set- ting for the occasion. In the afternoon the Field Day events were held in Putsey Park. Nestleton United Church A good attendance at Nestle- ton United for the combined worship service. Wilma Wotten was scripture reader. Lawrence Malcolm sang, "Jesus Is The Sweetest Name I Know," ac- companying himself on his key- board. Rev. D. Davis theme was on getting to know ourselves as we really are. Pianist was Carol Mairs. Note: Combined service next Sunday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. at Nestleton. Nestleton United Cemetery Service is Aug. 22 at 2:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Neta Fish with the help of daughter Au- drey Lishman, hosted a dinner party. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Davis and her mother, Mrs. Christina Henderson from Scotland, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Cawker and Ma- bel Cawker attended. On Sunday, Neta Fish had lunch with Doug Fish and Mari- on Short at Manilla and attend- ed the Decoration Service at Sunderland where Graham Fish is buried. Later they had dinner at Haugen's Barbecue at Manchester. : When I was 11 years of age two men I admired and stood out as my idol and I wish to be like them when I entered adult- hood was Sam Griffen and Er- nie Coy. Both had cottages on Putsey Dr. and both had just started in their lumber busi- nesses. Today Ernie and his wife Ethel are still going strong in their 90s. Sam has passed away but wife Verna is still liv- ing. Today, Sam's lumber busi- ness, "Lake Scugog Lumber Co." is celebrating its 60th year. Congratulations! But on this moment of jubilance we were all sadened due to a car accident to hear of the passing of Eileen Draper, an outstanding employ- ee of many years. You have two weeks to get the exterior of your car good and dirty then drive into the Scugog Fire Station No. 2, Caesarea, Aug. 14 and get an excellent wash. All funds raised go to Muscular Distrophy. Lake Scugog Regatta is hold- ing a barbecue on Aug. 21 at 20 Putsey Dr. Plans are to begin at about 4 p.m. with activities for the young fry, treasure hunt, sack race, three legged race, etc. Dinner around 6 p.m. Price is $7 for adults; $4 for children under 12. Not aimed as a money mak- er but a village get together, ad- vertising and tickets to follow. It will be cooler and more shade down here than in the park. I was over at Lawrence Mal- com's home the other night and spotted a bright light at the rear of his holdings and thought I heard jazz music. As I asked about it I noticed he kept look- ing up into the heavens above. Oh! he said, thats to keep the ra- coons out of my corn. When I ar- rived home the family had the E.T. tape on and suddenly it struck me, Lawrence is endeav- oring to entice and is baiting U.F.O. to his property. - I would like Donna Dunlop of the Port Perry area to please call me about an award, Albert Putsey 986-0181. Sympathy extended to area families I A eT 5 Eases Ee pS of Scugog Island By Reta Rea es Sy I ER LRT Ld a EE EEE BER i # As we hear about the happy times and successful celebra- tions during our recent weath- er-wise weekends, our hearts are heavy as we hear of people in other areas who suffer from floods and warfare and we won- der how we can ease their suf- fering. Even in our own midst, we hear of sad family events and losses. Our sympathy is extended to the Ashbridge family in the loss of a seven month old little girl who had seemed to be the an- swer for a little girl in the fami- ly. Hattie (Shunk) Irwin who was brought up with a family of six on the Pine Point Road nev- er forgot her early friends of Scugog, even though she spent her latter years in nursing homes where she shared her many interests. Her passing was very sudden and with no suffering. Recently, Alan Carter while enjoying some building efforts, found his ladder was not so trusty but his injury was not se- rious. At the Island Church through August, Manchester United Church people are with the Scu- gog Island Church for Augustin Sunday worship. We can scarcely wait for the annual chicken barbecue at the Scugog Island United Church on Aug. 22 with a choice of three sittings, starting at 4:30 p.m. Please call Bonnie Gerrow for a reserved ticket, at the usual price. Our thoughts are with Mabel Cawker and her detailed col- umns and her promise of look- ing forward to a full recovery and continued reports. fa ALBERT UNITED CHURCH PORT PERRY Minister Rev. D.
