lr "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Scugog Angels win silver medal at the Provincials The Scugog "Angels", not too long ago, won the branze medal in Owen Sound. We thought this was alright, what a Team Effort. Then this weekend, they put together a really all out team effort, after losing the first game in the Provincial Playoffs in London, Ontario. These ladies showed just why they were bronze medal win- ners in Owen Sound. The fans who were there got behind them, and let them know who they were urging on. The "An- gels" went on from there to win a silver medal and finish up sec- ond, after losing a heart- stopper to North Bay 5-3. Game One Ancaster 9-"Angels" 4 The Ancaster "Flyers" came right after the Scugog "Angels" In game one, taking the lead early in the second on three straight singles by Campbell, Cote and Hopkins' single scor- ing Campbell. This all hap- pened in the second inning be- fore the "Angels" could get on track. Joanne Graham got the "Angels" back in it quickly with a home run, to tie the score 1-1. 'A single by Starr, Misner, and an error resulted in run- ners getting in scoring position before Cote came to bat and sin- gled both runners home. In the fourth, Ancaster scored three more on hits by Morrison, Lawrence, Starr, Misner. The "Angels" got themselves right back in the game on Janie Thornton's double and Amber Wood's single. Tracy Smith then singled to load the bases. Kim Stewart singled to score Thornton, then Nancy McCon- nell singled home two runs. Joanne Graham singled to load the bases again, before the in- ning came to an end. This made the score 6-4 in favor of Ancast- er. Ancaster added three more in the top of the sixth on four sin- gles and a walk for the final score 9-4 Ancaster. Hamilton, Lawrence, Starr who went 4-4 on the game were the leading hitters for Ancaster. Laurie Dudgeon, Amber Wood and Joanne Graham all had two hits for the "Angels". Game Two Scugog "Angels" 7 Port Colborne 5 One of the top teams in Inter- national ball come from Port Colborne. Pat Spading, Pres. of the P.W.S.A., does the coaching here, and we kinda felt we would be in for some game. And it turned out to be just that, a close 7-5 win for the "Angels". The "Angels" let Port Col- borne get the jump on them in the first inning on a single by D. Ruster, and a home run by Su- san Maxfield, to give them an early lead 2-0. The "Angels" got one back on a home run by Nancy McConnell. The "Angels" then proceeded to shut down Port Colborne un- til the seventh inning. In the meantime, the "Angels" got two runs in the bottom of the second on Joyce Parkinson's single, then scored on Mandee Porter's triple, who in turn scored on Tracy Smith's single. In the third, Laurie Dudgeon singled, was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by McConnell, then scored on Gena Spence's single. We got nothing in the fourth, but add- ed two more runs in the fifth, Joanne Graham's double fol- ° lowed by Gena Spence's home run. Tracy Smith homered in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Port Colborne tried to mount a come- back by scoring three runs on singles by Kerry Jones and Sue Pittman before D. Ruiter ho- mered to end the scoring, before Maxwell flied out. Final score Scugog "Angels" 7, Port Col- borne 5. "Angels" 7 Hamilton 6 Sue Gordon singled to start off Hamilton after two outs, stole second base, then came home on Copeland's single. Hamilton added another in the second on K. Joo's homer. Then the "Angels" woke up. Gena Spence started things off with a single, a walk to Joyce Parkinson, than a double by Ja- nie Thornton to score Gena, a single by Amber Wood scoring "Parky", a fielder's choice by Tracy Smith forcing Janie Thornton out, a single by Lau- rie Dudgeon . scoring Amber Wood and Tracy Smith. A walk to Nancy McConnell, and a walk to Joanne Graham loaded the bases again, and Gena Spence drove home the two lead runners, before the inning end- ed, giving the "Angels" a 6-2 lead. A base on balls, and a double by Gordon got Hamilton their third run. The Ponitars were held off in the fourth, but came alive to tie the game at 6-6. A walk, single by Gordon, single by Copeland, then a double by Reilly scored two to tie. In the seventh, they got nothing. But the "Angels" Joyce Parkinson started things by singling to right field. A sacrifice bunt by Janie Thornton, Amber Wood won the ball after driving home Parkinson with a single. Joanne Graham threw a nine-hitter, striking out five batters. Bass'n'tario tournament in Scugog this Saturday The Bass'n'tario Lake Scugog Open will be held this Satur- Fishermen will be competing for the top prize of $7,000 in cash for theone-day tournament. Bass'n'tario tournaments allow anglers a total weight of This tournament will be the second qualifying round in Kawartha Division II. Many anglers who competed in the GM Pro Bass tournament on Lake Scugog last month will also be taking part in this weekend's derby. The competition gets underway at 7 a.m. at the lakefront. A weigh-in show will be held at the end of the day's competition. 1 fish caught in the tournament will be released back into the lake by the Shimano Live Release Boat. Durham Pony Club hosted the Central Ontario Regional Pony Club Prince Philip Games finals on Monday, Aug. 2 at Dreamcrest Equestrian Centre. The games are mounted relay races and points are accumulat- ed over the season. Speed and agility on the part of the pony and rider are essential. The "A" team finished third overall for the season. The "B" team finished in first place overall and is now eligible to compete at the C.N.E. for the Eastern Canadian Champion- ships on Aug. 23. Members of the team are. Beth Murray, Jamie Alloway, Lesley Harding and Andrea Smith. The "C" team ended the sea- son in second place and the Masters level team, which is for players over the maximum age for P.P.G., also finished in first place for the season. Members of rugby and softball teams Local residents to compete in Canada Games this month By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Three Scugog Township resi- dents will be in British Colum- bia this month to participate in the 1993 Canada Games. Allen Foggetti, Lindsay Parry and Rick Finlay, all of Scugog Township, will be taking part in the games. Foggetti, 18, and Parry 17, both members of the Ontario Rugby team will be vying for the Canadian Rugby Champion- ship. The two just returned from overseas where they were on tour with the Ontario Rugby Union Team. Finlay will be the coach of the women's softball team. He is currently the coach of the Scu- gog Angels Ladies Fastball Club. Robert Abbot, of Uxbridge, will be the manager of the mens softball team. The Canada Games are con- sidered training ground for in- ternational competitions such as the Olympics, Common- wealth Games and the Pan-Am Games. Since its inception in 1967, the Canada Games has alter- nated between summer and winter every two years, to vary the field of events. This year Ontario is sending more than 300 athletes, coaches and managers to join 4,000 oth- ers from each province across Canada. For the first time, disabled athletes will be taking part in the games this year. Men and women will compete in 18 different sports at the games. Competitors will take part in archery, athletics, base- ball, basketball, canoeing, cy- cling, diving, field hockey, row- ing, rugby, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, vol- leyball, waterskiing and wres- ° tling. At the 1989 games, held in Saskatoon, Ontario won the Games flag over its nearest ri- vals from Quebec and British Columbia. The games flag is presented to the province which accumulates the most points, not the most medals. The games will run from Sun- day, August 8 through Satur- day, August 21 in Kamloops, British Columbia. The opening ceremonies will be telecast live on CBC from 3-5 p.m. on August 8.
