Last year, the team came within a single run of represent- ing Ontario in New Brunswick and this year have been playing great ball in the league and in tournaments. However, their plans came to: an abrupt halt as they dropped two straight games at Carling- ton Park in the nation's capital and were out of the tourna- ment. The first game was against Waterford (who went through the tournament undefeated) and an indicator of the Gam- bler's weekend occurred when the first Waterford batter struck out on a sharp breaking drop ball and the pitch eluded the Gambler catcher and Wa- terford had a runner on first. Two pitches later, another pitch went to the backstop and the runner advanced to second base and promptly scored the game's first run on a base hit up the middle. Jim Chilvers on the Green- bank mound settled down and kept Waterford off the score sheet and in the sixth inning Trevor Till drew a walk and tied the game when he scored on Don Beaton's clutch triple. Bea- ton died on third when the Wa- Ll, terford second baseman made a fine stop and put out on Chil- ver's hard shot between first and second for the final out. The game went into extra in- nings and in the eighth inning a single dnd an infield error had put two Waterford runners on base when their third baseman hit a long home run with two men out. Final score Waterford 4 - Greenbank 1. Mike Giroux had a pair of Gambler hits with Paul Gore- ski, Brian Till and Don Beaton also hitting safely. Jim Chilvers allowed four hits during the game and struck out nine bat- ters. The evening game was a nightmare for Greenbank as the team came up flat and dropped a 6-0 decision to St. Thomas. Mark Goreski had an off game on the Greenbank mound and St. Thomas had a 3- 0 lead before the Gamblers had retired a batter. The combina- tion of weak Greenbank hitting and fielding, along with strong St. Thomas batting and defence saw the club go down by a 6-0 score and exit the tournament. Jim Chilvers, Don Beaton and Mark Goreski were the only Gamblers to hit safely in the game. Waterford and Kanata made it to the Intermediate final while Waterloo and Toronto Gators went to the Senior fi- nals. The Greenbank club will have to shake off this disap- pointing outcome and regroup for the Oshawa League Cham- pionships and the O.A.S.A. In: termediate "A" Championship in September. ~ "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Stars play the Oshawa Hornets at Durham Fields this Thurs- dayat8 p.m. : The following Thursday (Aug. 12) Port Perry Antrims will visit' Greenbank for an 8 p.m. encounter with the Gam- blers. Perfect Heating won 15-4. All-stars for the Heaters were Jason Cooper who made a nice double play on second and caught two fly balls in centre field. Steven Martin played great in left field catching hard to get balls. Ben Frith played excellent defense behind the plate and offensively went four for four including a triple. Matt Sturgess hit his first home run of the season while Mike Phoe- nix hit two home runs and a triple. Travis Howell played great defense on all positions played, as well as hit a home run that hit the fence. This was Travis Howell's last game with Perfect Heating as he is moving out west. He will be missed by his teammates and we wish him all the best. Good luck with your baseball career Travis. Lake Scugog Lumber's team all played great defensive ball. Brennan Malcolm's offense was excellent hitting two triples and taking a walk. Mathew Rankin pitched a good game as well as hit a nice double. Chris and Greg Langford covered their po- sitions well.
