--yr ee wy - "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" a sc pM DATE re Ro Ais Tor ri I a ra By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The telecommunications in- dustry is changing at a rapid pace, and Compton Cable plans to change right along with it. Ron Compton, president of the company serving Uxbridge and Scugog, said plans are in the works for a $2-million im- provement project. The plan includes an upgrade of the trunk lines and a new broadcasting format. , Mr. 'Compton said the tele- communications industry is "ready to explode" in the next decade as technology becomes more and more complex. There- fore there is a need to continue to upgrade to accommodate these advances. "We really want to build a cable system of the future and the only way you can do this is to keep looking at new technolo- gy," he said. The bulk of Compton's $2- million project will be focussed around the installation of fibre Circus coming optic cables. These tiny cables are capable of transmitting 80 analog chan- nels on one strand of fibre. The fibre optic cables which the local company intends on using will contain 50 to 100 fibres. Mr. Compton said the rebuild project will provide the latest technology to facilitate approxi- mately 500 channels. He cautions, however, that 500 channels will not be availa- ble to the subscribers. Mr. Compton says the project is in the planning stages and a blueprint is currently being drafted for the project. He antic- ipates the plan to be completed by the end of this month.
