"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 17,1998 - a3 Legion Squirts pick up silver medals at tournament The Port Perry Squirts finished off their Legion Durham League play last week with a game against Stouffville on Thursday night. Unfortu- nately, our bats were not swing- ing too well as we did not collect a single safe hit. Mike Versage reached base in the first inning when he was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a walk to Chris Jones. Mike scored on an error when Jeff Ashton hit to the shortstop, who let it go through his legs out into left field. Mike scored in the third inning as he reached on an er- ror, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and stole home on a passed ball. The only other runners to reach base were Darryl Dalton, Chris Mon- sma and Mike again, with walks. Chris Jones pitched the en- tire game, striking out 11 while allowing three walks and four hits. A couple of great defensive plays were made by Sean Jef- frey, making a running catch in righ t field and a nice snag b Chris Monsma in centre field, tracking down a ball to hold a runner to a single instead of an extra base hit. Final score 4-2 for Stouffville. On the weekend, we travelled to Scarborough for the year-end tournament which was in the form of a double knockout with the other nine teams from the league, First game of the day put us up against Pickering. The boys were swinging the bats Better, however, we couldn't find too many holes in the Pickering defence. Jeff hit a home run over the left fielder's head and had a single also. Reid McTaggart, who swung the bat well all weekend, had a single in the second and 'with his great speed stole second and scored from second on a passed ball Racing action continued Saturday mig ht at Mosport Speed- o way and the racing was nearly as hot as the weather. The Thunder Car schedule was expanded to six heat races to accommodate an influx of new drivers but it was the Mosport regulars who gratiously demonstrated the techniques required to win on the half mile oval. Royce Jones and Bob Kish, both of whom are vying for the season championship, scored two victo- ries a piece with Kevin Nelles and Darren ockney each grab- bingone checkered flag. A massive 32 car field took the green flag for the 15 lap feature event with pole sitter, Scott Douglas heading the pack. Royce Jones made a demon start from his third row starting position and by the end of the second lap was dicing door handle to door handle with Douglas. On the next circuit, Kish joined the front group as the leaders encountered a gaggle of back-markers and in the confusion, one car was sent spinning into the turn three wall, bringing out the yellow flag. Blamed in part for the acci- dent, Jones was relegated to the back of the field and on the re- start, could only watch as Kish rocketed off into the lead. The fi- nal eight laps were run incident free with Kish claiming a six car length victory over Douglas, who in turn held a similar advan- tage over third place man and current points leader, Doug Todg- ham. In a valiant effort, Jones delivered the drive of the night to finish in sixth spot. The Street Stock class offered a-little more variety to their show as four different drivers, Glen Fricker, Brent Sullivan, Joe Malette and Duke Paul all recorded heat victories. The amazing part of the preliminaries was that, in 40 total laps of green flag racing, there was only one caution period, that called to simply pick up someone's runaway bumper. | The furious racing action carried on to the 20 lap feature event which saw defending champion Andy Warbutton pres- sure front runner Duke Paul for a hotly contested 10 laps before the racin' realtor squirted through into the lead, towing Brent Sullivan with him. Five laps later, Graham Brown lost a wheel in turn two and collected Joe Malette in the ensuing spin, bring- ing out the yellow flag. On the restart Sullivan out-dragged Warbutton into corner one to take top spot but the Whitby driv- er threw the lead away as he looped his car at the end of the back straight. Warbutton then drove a quick but cautious three lap sprint to claim the victory ahead of Duke Paul and series points leader, Dwight Brown. The Late Model Sportsman division rounded out the eve- ning's entertainment and the heat race wins were claimed by Vic Auger (two), Randy Slack and Ken Paston. *(Auger, who scored the feature win last week, had that victory stripped from him as a result of a post-race technical inspection). Seventeen cars began the feature event, a 25 lap affair slowed by six caution periods. Port Perry's John Baker held the early lead but a break in the front suspension allowed Auger to take the point. The Trenton driver then withstood the challenges of Paston and Stan King and survived the multiple yellow flags but a mechanical problem in the back end of the Lumina slowed the car and allowed Randy Slack to slip into the top spot with just three laps to go. Slack held on for the victory with Auger crossing the line in second, just ahead of a charging Alex Hamil- ton. Rod Sauder, in the Sn ap-On Tools Lumina entered the night with a single point advantage over Ken Paston in the sea- son's standings and held on to that lead finishing fourth, one po- sition better than his rival. Daryl Leatherdale was, once again, forced from competition with mechanical woes, but Dave Taylor from Caesarea was rewarded for his effort with a sixth place fin- ish. There is a mistake in your Mosport Racing Program, rest as- gured that there is racing action at the Speedway next Satur- day, and with only four weekends left on the calendar, the bat- tles are guaranteed to be heating up. See you there, From Corner Five....... Nl and throwout attempt at third. Aaron Lycett beat out a' nice bunt single and Sean Jeffrey 'came up ith the only other hit of the ga Chris. Nice. dou- bo play. Another great defen- sive play was made by Aaron Lycett as he made a runni catch in left field that coul have gone over his head. Final in this one was Port 4, Picker- ing 0. Second game of the day was against Bramalea who ended up in first place with no losses for the entire league play. The boys were pumped for this one as- they really wanted to bet Bramalea in the worst way. We knew this would be a pitching duel and it certainly was. Chris pitched this game, setting down 14 batters and allowing one hit. However, eight batters reached base on walks. Port only had _ four hits in the.game and they went to Chris Monsma with 2 " perfectly-executed bunt sin- gles, Reid with another bunt - single and a single up the mid- a perfect bunt sacrifice to ad- vance Sean Jeffrey who came in to run for Mark Richardson. Sean eventually scored on the bunts by Reid and Chris M. This game was tied at the end of six innings and because of time limit, the International Tie Breaker rule was brought into effect. Mark started at sec- ond for the first extra inning and was thrown out trying to steal third. Reid reached base - on a walk, however, we could not score him. In the bottom of the seventh, Jason for Bramal- ea was the runner to start at second and he advanced to third on a passed ball. Chris struck out the next two batters and walked the third. Things were getting a little tense with two runners on, however, Chris came through with flying colors and struck out the next batter. Port left two runners stranded in the eighth to bring Bramalea back to the plate. The runner at second advanced to third on a passed ball and came in to score on another passed ball, leaving Port with the loss. Final score Bramalea 3, Port 2. Sunday the boys came to play again since they knew that they could have four back-to-back games to win the final and they wanted one more crack at Bra- malea. The boys came out very aggressive at the plate the first inning as the first five batters all scored to put Oshawa hind the eight ball. Chris Mon- sma reached on a walk, Mike Versage hit a double, Darryl Dalton a single, Ryan McQuade a double and Mark Richardson picked up a walk to get the game started. Ryan hit a single in the third but was unable to score. In the fourth, Sean Jef- frey and Aaron Lycett both reached base on a walk and scored on a triple hit by Mike Versage. Mark Richardson hit a double in the fifth but was un- able to score. Port picked up two more runs in the sixth as mond Hill. T Mike MacLennan and Darryl reached on walks and Ryan hit them in with his second double. Oshawa picked up a run in the sixth to make the score 7-1. Chris pitched this game also and fanned 18 hattors, walked three and allowed three hits. On to game two, another nail biter, as we had to go to the tie breaker rul this. against Rich- is was the game we had to win to get anotlier crack at Bramalea. Chris every ounce he had left in im as he struck our 22 batters, walked two and allowed five hits in eight innings of play. Port was down 2-0 in the fourth inning but battled back in the sixth to tie the game. However, Richmond Hill went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. Port battled back again to tie it at 3-3 in the seventh and held them down to go to extra in- nings. Mike Versage started at second for this one. Darryl Dal- * ton reached base on a fielder's choice then back-to-back hits by Ryan McQuade and Jeff Ashton scored Mjke and Dar- ryl. Port allowed Richmond Hill one run in the bottom of the in- "ning to win 65-4. Good base run- ning and defensive plays were the highlights of this game. - With the boys starting to feel "the heat of the day, Coach Dal- ton let them run through the own a sprinkler system to cool bit as the Bramalea team had not played a game since 9 a.m. that morning 'he knew we had one strike against us already. - 'Mark. Richardso too ; dle by Jeff. Chris Jones also had n took to the evening. 2h mound as Unris was fooling the heat and had a sore shoulder' from his two previous: games. Mark pitched well against this very strong Bramalea team. He allowed: eight hits, struck out four and walked two in four and a third innings. Chris took over and allowed three hits, three | walks and struck out one. Reid McTagga of the great defensive plays of 'the game. Chris Monsma also made a great catch in left field. Mike Versage at third nearly pulled off a double play &s he grabbed a line drive and just at third to catch the runner who had come off aed very ak missed theb the base. The boys pla hard but you could tell by the ~ very red faces that the heat was . 5 just too much for them. Offensively Chris Monsma had a single as well as Mike ~ Versage and Reid McTagg art. Ryan - McQuade picked uj double and a walk, Darryl al. ton picked up two walks while Jeff picked up a single base on "balls. Final score 12-4 for Bra- 'malea. The boys can be very proud of the Sher medals that they picked up in this tourna- ment as most of the teams in this league are classed above " them for the O.A.S:A. elimina- tions. Speaking of O.AS.A., don't forget to be at the lake- front diamonds the next two weekends as the Midgets go this weekend 'and. the Legion Squirts go' the next weekend.
