Mr. Stevenson * has, from the start, always been a strong supporter 'of our efforts to disturb and dislodge the un- employment situation .in this area and wanted the opportuni- 4 tolearn first hand how we are ackling the problem, and what we have achieved through our efforts. In welcoming and introdue- ing Mr. Stevenson, I took the op- portunity to tell those present that, at hough S.E.S. is just a new and small office, it is a com- munity run operation, and owes any success to the solid team of supporting partners on whom we rely daily. Mayor Howard Hall and Councillor Ken Gads- den have been actively involved «in every aspect of our develop- ~ ment, and are constantly lend- ing their advice, assistance and . practical support to our efforts. Together we have made a strong showing and accom-. plished a fair amount of success + since startingout onJune 28. Before getting into the details ~ of our track record to date, I . must say again that we could: ~not have. accomplished thing at all had it not been for the initial and vital support of + Drs. Jack Cottrell and Jim Har- dy, who so kindly donated the any- office until Labor Day, and Jim + Grieve whose advice, generosi- > ty and community spirit seems to be endless and who is totally committed th the efforts to ge Scugog working. Algo the Do 'nesses who haveo cal services (Port Perry Print- ing, Port Perry Star, Scugog Citizen), have all been an enor- mous help all along. Many have had. long- standing careers and are past the age when they thought they would ever have to hunt for a job again; most are out of work 'through no fault of their own, . due to downsizing or business failure. Many were at the peak of their professions, have out- standing qualifications and skills and are at a loss as to where to turn next. It is not un- usual to see husbands and wives who are both out of work, - ora single parent without a job, and so many young people who have no idea what to do with: their education now they are out of school or university. At S.E.S. we tackle each prob- lem head on. We have no mira- cles to offer and cannot wave a magic wand and produce jobs-, for-all out of thin air, but we can _ accentuate the positive, and show the best ways to start to resolve a problem. We must be doing something right because, since June 28, 10 of our resi- dents have found full-time em- 'ployment and one has a part-. "time job. These numbers. may not seem large, but they repre- sent a good start. We are begin- _ ning to get enquiries from em- ~ployers for workers - and this is - precisely what will get Scugog working: again.
